The picture in the street was the Sportsman and so was the one indoors with the injured man. The CCTV footage is probably from the King's Table, which is a beer bar and attracts that clientele. I don't think the bloodied guy in the video is Dave, or I hope it isn't because the guy in the video is wearing a wedding band. A man can recover faster from a slash to the face than he can from a bad marriage.

More dodgy "Benidorm Brits" I would guess, the same sort that got caught after robbing a fellow Brit late last month.

Sportsmans and the Kings Table have the same owner now.

I always preferred Lloret myself !

You can take the Brits out if Britain but you can't take Britain out if the Brits.

Do they still go out on weekends to get drunk and street fight there?

I think it might be a good idea to start packing some heat before you go to a bar in Pattaya anymore....The bars in Pattaya are becoming very dangerous...

No doubt they wanted to shake him down to get a monthly payment and when he refused they cut him.

He had opened the bar just after covid when rents were very low, just for fun, as a place to socialize with friends. Raising rent was part of his decision but the threats sealed the deal. He also noted that almost every night there would be some sort of incident, pushing, sometimes punches thrown. He blames it all on the rapidly increasing use of drugs by expats which didn't seem to be an issue 10+ years ago. He figures with the relaxed pot laws, more younger Brits come here and try to support themselves selling pot, meth and ice which always leads to forming gangs. "Running a bar isn't much fun anymore." he said.

Authorities need to clamp down.

The bars in Pattaya are always dangerous if you're looking for trouble, just like anywhere else. However, they can also be very pleasant places to pass an evening as I have done many times in my 20 years living here, even though I'm a Brit.

A sad sign of the times- and I suspect unless there is a very big continuous police presence nothing will change

Mmm "authorities need to crack down". Sorry to say but some RTP are part of the action also. I know it as being fact. In 2013 in Pattaya there were small bars and a Thai boxing ring . It was at the pier just before the Walking St entrance. Anyway I became a good friend of the Russian owner whose name was Nutti who is dead now. He was a very big man and afraid of nothing. He owned the "Oil bar in that pier.

Apart from other interesting stories about the RTP and the mafia made up of RTP was one story where he said he had to pay a very very significant bribe monthly to the RTP or they would close him down.

Yeah, but that's well known. I have nothing to do with the bar industry, but even I have heard that. And bar owners probably know the drill when they set up shop.

But it's a big difference if anybody and everybody starts to form a gang of thugs and starts demanding payouts. For one thing, the RTP might threaten to shut down your bar, but they won't kill you like random gangs.

The bribe he paid to the RTP so he had them in his pocket was to cover their time to arrest gangs or thugs that demanded payouts. That's why the RTP is referred to as the biggest mafia in the world. Plus if Nutti had gangsters that threatened his life he was content knowing the RTP would ensure they were permanently removed wink wink!

So this bar owner hasn't been paying his bribes to the RTP?

Before opening a bar in Pattaya, perhaps it's best to talk to other bar owners and get the lay of the land so you know what you are getting yourself into.

Yes he paid the bribes whilst he owned the bar but he was lucky to sell it a couple years before Covid hit.

As for getting answers if you are interested in buying a bar do you think any would tell you about the bribes you have to pay?? They talk up the price not down.

Back in 2004, I bought a 33% share of a Nana Plaza bar from an American friend. When He and I and a silent partner sat down to go over the financials, I was surprised to see no entry along the likes of "Public Relations" or any other euphemism for under the table payments. "Who takes care of the police?", I asked.

"Nobody." was the surprising response. Neither he nor any of the other Nana Plaza bar owners he knew had ever been asked for a regular bribe from either the police or local politicians. "Narit", the local cop who's beat was Nana Plaza would stop by from time to time, accept a drink or two, play some pool, flirt with the girls he knew but the only brown envelope he ever got was at Christmas time when everybody from the sweepers to the ice guy got the same. Hard to believe but true.

I don't find it hard to believe at all.

All the posters who talk about "brown envelopes" I have always thought very few have first hand knowledge of bribes.

A lot of posters want to seem worldly and sophisticated and post as if they know something when all they know is barstool banter.

I am not trying to say that there is no corruption or bribes passed in Thailand just that the direct knowledge of it probably doesn't reach the average poster here.
