Briton Cuts Living Costs With Move to Chiang Mai

A British man who left the UK due to rising living costs says he now lives comfortably in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on just GBP800 a month, compared with more than GBP3,000 a month previously. Robert Hoadley, 45, from Portsmouth, relocated in 2025 and says the move has given him greater financial freedom, improved work-life balance and a healthier lifestyle.

Robert spent years working in construction before deciding to leave the UK. He said he had become frustrated by working long hours simply to cover increasing expenses and felt he had little freedom to enjoy life. After deciding he did not want to wait until retirement to pursue a different lifestyle, he sold everything he owned and moved more than 6,000 miles away to Thailand.

Now based in Chiang Mai, Robert works online as a content creator, producing material about the cost of living and relocating abroad. He is developing multiple online income streams that allow him to work remotely. His social media platform, Sea Turkey Adventures, has attracted more than 6,000 followers, with some videos receiving over 200,000 views.

Robert says daily life in Thailand is significantly less stressful. He highlighted lower living costs, affordable leisure activities and a wider range of lifestyle options, including gyms, cafes, swimming pools and outdoor pursuits. He also noted that pints can cost as little as GBP2, although he says he now drinks less than he did in the UK and focuses more on health, fitness and routine.

According to Robert, one of the biggest benefits is the reduced financial pressure. He said many people underestimate how far money can stretch abroad and believes Thailand offers good food, friendly people, a strong expatriate community and a high quality of life at a fraction of UK costs. He added that the warmer climate and more relaxed pace of life have also contributed to his overall happiness.

Despite the positives, Robert acknowledges there are aspects of Britain he still misses. He cited friends and family, traditional pub culture, certain foods and what he described as the UK’s distinctive sense of humour and sarcasm. He said those qualities are difficult to replace, even though he is satisfied with his decision to move overseas.

The Mirror reported that as he continues building his online business and audience, Robert says he remains committed to his new life in Thailand. His experience reflects a growing interest among some Britons in seeking lower living costs and different lifestyles abroad while maintaining remote sources of income.

The sheer insanity of it all. Moves abroad for a cheaper cost of living, becomes a content creator to interest others in his lifestyle, contributes to the place getting overrun and the cost of living exploding.

One guy will explode the cost of living?

What was more sustainable, being a musician back then, or social media today? We do not really know, do we? How old were you? And did you already have a pension?

Obviously, you are one of the winners. Not everyone is so lucky, and many struggle. Thailand versus the UK? I do not know what is worse.

And honestly, I truly believe that for a good life in Thailand, you need a good partner, especially if you are dependent on making a living here. We also know little about him and how he plans to secure his future. Maybe he has more foundation than we know.

Much of my professional music life was in Norway, so made a good living with my then wife as one of my singers. We started private UK pensions mid 80s, but I cashed them in when we divorced to buy land here in 2002 which I then sold at a vast profit to buy house and car in 2012. I do get a small state pesnsion from Norway, giving us enough to live on.

As an Ausralian pensioner, there are two main issues that prevent me from retiring in Thailand. First, I have completely free medical care in Australia, and second, because I'm concerned with my health and want to live as long as possible, it doesn't make sense to live in a country that gets an unhealthy haze due to burn-off every year.

I do envy those from more advanced countries (sadly that excludes my home country) providing a national healthcare program for their citizens. The balance changes considerably if an American. Personally happy in Chiang Mai with Thai Wife and Stepdaughter for 16 years now.

The man is right. Thailand is cheap, but there are other issues too. Traffic is terrible, airpollution not healthy, imported food and drinks very expendise, and the tax is also more than in other countries. But with a normal life, it is fine to live with 35k a month. In Europe impossible. It seems that everything is only positive here, but unfortunatelly that is not true, but that is not mentioned by the man

So cook it yourself,

Paid 20bht for two large potatoes (local market), 70bht for a pork loin joint (Lotus's) this morning.

Will be having baked potato, roast pork and gravy for lunch ........ 25bht per serving (3 meals 90bht).

Just back from cycling 15Km, hardly any traffic and no pollution, weather was great (but looked like it might rain).

Also purchased 200g of cannabis bud for 950bht, no need for imported drinks!

Probably not a good idea to live here if you suffer constantly from poor health.

Normal people don't have health problems.

I don't really understand why people that found their so called "little paradise" have to publicize all over the Internet so soon it will be over run by the people and problems that you were running away from. In his case I guess it is part of his job.

3000 GBP in the UK or 800 GBP in Thailand would give you a similar lifestyle .

Small room, cheap food , frugal existence

That dude could travel the entire country and stay in hotels on 800 pounds a month. He can't do that in the UK.

Yeah anyone can live in a studio room for 3000 baht and eat only Thai priced street food a few years, but then reality kicks in. If the guy made the same Thai food in UK and rented a student room, the budget would not be that different.

If only few of them had the brains to realize that, they could work a few years like that, and save up a ton (which destroys the entire Gen Z argument of 'i can not save up to buy a house' too.

The truth is they are sheep people, they can only follow a herd, hence it works for them in Thailand but not in UK, as standards are simply higher, and they want to be on page 1 from day 1.

In Thailand living that same lifestyle, their ego can still survive, as of seeing most locals do the same.

This guy has clearly been watching too many Walk About Wayne videos. Next thing we know it he'll be competing for 3000 baht/month apartments with university girls.

There obviously is no health insurance, any real insurance that really covers, cheapest, even at age 30 today, costs 5-6K baht per month. Anything cheaper is just a fake insurance for small things only, often not covering it on top.

Yeah he became one of the 5-6 creeps that always walks around the CMU lake in the mornings and late afternoons for sure. Then he will sit down with 2-3 of them at the coffeeshop there to proceed to the food hall.

So he doesn't need the cheapest real health insurance (5,000 baht), he never needs new clothes, maintain a bike, a new phone or visit home (even if it is once i 4 years). He does't travel anywhere on that budget either. He will never get a serious girlfriend on it either. But he is telling us, HE LIVES THE DREAM!!!

Wouldn't be surprised health insurances even refuse to help on lung isuses if having lived there 5 years lol.

It is not at all, they just diversified from the 2 main areas to 6 areas and all are sluggish entirely since 2016. Most houses are even empty or for rent, just capital parking of the elite. Maybe you need to get out your cave more often to observe actual reality. Nothing of Chiang Mai original people or vibes is even left over at this point.

Also both real estate prices for sale and for rent are down since 1.5-2 years hard already. It started from the last flooding and it only got worse since the last earthquake on top. They ditch houses for <10k a month that used to be 25K 2.5 year ago.

Why can't he travel? Hua Hin has 8000 baht monthly rooms with large pool and gym. Fan trains cost 24 baht per hour of travel. Massaman curry is 50 baht beach front at Ban Krut. Daily gym is 50 baht. If he rents by the month he could travel the entire country on that budget.

The UK offers a significant social wage, not least health care but also schooling for kids and a welfare safety net.

I would flip your numbers.

£800 in Thailand is without any resilience whatsoever, one small hiccup might spell utter disaster.

Yeah have fun with that, pathetic. Those are paper plans, not reality, you would be a sweating meatball after hour 2. If all those things were really that fun, many people would do it, and they don't.

Thai inflation is low but over 25 years of course it's more expensive. Every city is. If it was cheaper that would be depression in the economy.
