Driver, 19, Hits Pedestrian in Phuket, Victim Dies

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a car driven by a 19-year-old in Phuket in the early hours of 25 April 2026. The victim, identified only as Attachai, was hit by a black BMW 330e M Sport at around 02:30 on Patak Road in Chalong, near the boundary with Rawai. The victim suffered severe injuries and was later pronounced dead.

According to reports, the victim had been out with friends at a nearby venue in the Chalong area. While walking back to their vehicle, a shoe came off in the road, prompting the victim to return to retrieve it. As Attachai attempted to cross back, the car, reportedly travelling at high speed, struck the victim, throwing the body a considerable distance.

CCTV footage of the incident was shared by the Facebook page “Phuket Times”, showing the moment of impact. The footage quickly circulated online, prompting widespread public reaction. Many social media users criticised excessive speeding in the area, with some calling for stricter traffic calming measures such as speed bumps and urging drivers to use racetracks rather than public roads for high-speed driving.

Police identified the driver as a 19-year-old male, named only as Arsee. He was taken into custody for questioning by investigators from Chalong Police Station. Officers have documented the scene and are reviewing CCTV evidence as part of the ongoing legal process.

The incident has renewed concerns about road safety in Phuket, particularly regarding speeding in urban and residential areas. Public comments suggest frustration over repeated cases involving fast driving, including by both locals and foreign motorists.

Authorities have not yet announced any charges but confirmed that the case is proceeding in accordance with legal procedures. Amarin reported that police will continue gathering evidence, including witness statements and technical analysis of the vehicle. The victim’s family and friends have called for justice and urged authorities to ensure accountability in the case.

The driver was going fast, but the victim was also not watching for traffic....

Driver blame:

  • Possibly speed.

  • Possibly not looking ahead and seeing activity in the road and stopping.

  • Possibly assuming they'd 'stay out of the way'

Deceased blame:

  • Walking across the road (losing a shoe).

  • Going back into the road without looking.

  • Nearly getting hit by the black car.

  • Still not paying full attention if that wasn't warning enough.

  • Stepping into oncomming traffic without looking.

Thailand blame:

  • Road seems fast to run right past what appears to be an 'entertainment area' (guess).

  • No traffic calming measures / crossings (as if they'd have an impact anyway).

Numerous issues

  • Driver blows through a busy area.

  • Seeming drunk person with no sense of self preservation.

  • Road design in the area allows for fast traffic.

Bottom line 2 people making a mistake at the same time. Definitely, though, the driver should get hung. It is called a loss of vehicle control. Not paying attention.

It will be interesting to see what happens, especially if he does not have a licence, then parents should be held accountable.

Not like victim didn't know traffic would whiz by, as had to scurry across once, then 1 blows by on the return, and yet, still doesn't notice the oncoming car.

Not seeing a crosswalk. Trying not to victim blame, but every now & then, common sense should kick in.

The first car also seems to be going very fast. Possible friendly race going on between the drivers?

No, he isn't. Daddy has money and it was a BMW. Police will carefully review everything and decide not to lay charges. Maybe 1,000 baht fine for no licence.

He was taken into custody for questioning by investigators from Chalong Police Station and quickly released after daddy dropped an envelope on the floor while he was entering the police station to get his son released.

Were they ?... Motorcycle that passed road racing too ?

I question if the car might have been exceeding the legal speed limit.

I question if the legal speed limit for that area was even reasonaly.

I question if having a road like that through a built up (entertainment) area.

I do not question that the deceased stepped into traffic with any sense of self preservation.

Thailand still after decades of driving have not figured how to enforce speed limits, one the most important rules of the road in my opinion. Not only do they not they enforce their clearly posted speed limits, the speed limits themselves are ludicrous and allow things like 90k/hour in areas that have uni girls riding two on motorbike to get to go to class.

Just last night some teenager in front of my house was racing on his motorbike, lost control and hit a tree instantly killing himself.

The police allow this to happen all day, every day and never learn a single lesson. If one of these speeders kills an innocent person they just write it off as an act of god and proceed with compensation and a funeral.

Hands down the worst thing about living in Thailand and it's not even close. National disgrace doesn't even begin to cover just how bad the situation is.

It's not a build up entertainment area. Speed limit is 50 km/h there.

Is there a traffic sign to signal the speed limit of 50 km/h?

Perhaps obscured by the first one that nearly clipped him. As many say, perhaps they were racing.

By heart I think there is one further up the road.
