Food Costs Soar in Thailand Despite Price Control Plans

Consumers in Thailand are experiencing increased pressure from escalating living expenses, driven primarily by soaring fresh food prices. The costs of pork, chicken, and eggs have particularly surged, impacting household budgets significantly. These price hikes occur amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have led to higher energy costs and disrupted global supply chains, despite the Commerce Ministry's assurance that no controlled goods have raised prices and price controls are still enforced.

Data from the Internal Trade Department highlights a clear rise in chicken prices, with chicken drumsticks and thighs increasing from Bt80-Bt85 to Bt90-Bt95 per kilogramme and Bt85-Bt100 to Bt95-Bt100, respectively, since early March. Pork prices have seen an even steeper increase, with lean pork climbing from Bt145-Bt150 per kilogramme to Bt150-Bt165 as of March 20. This trend correlates with data from the Office of Agricultural Economics, showing live pig prices at the farm level in Nakhon Pathom escalated by Bt6 per kilogramme.

Egg prices are also affected, with size 3 eggs increasing from Bt3.5-Bt3.6 to Bt3.7-Bt3.8 each. Small retail shops are reportedly selling eggs for over Bt4 each, compounding the financial pressure on households that consider eggs a dietary staple. Despite the Ministry's stance, sources indicate a contradictory scenario painted by official data, suggesting cost increases are being passed along the supply chain to consumers.

Several market consumers report paying more than the prices suggested by authorities, highlighting a need for governmental intervention to address these discrepancies. They urge a thorough investigation and effective measures to prevent the soaring living costs from overwhelming low-income families.

Looking forward, the situation's trajectory remains uncertain, influenced by continuing global conflicts and their impact on supply chains. Authorities may face increased pressure to implement stricter enforcement of price controls and provide relief to affected consumers. The effectiveness of these measures will be crucial in mitigating financial strains on Thai households, reported The Nation.

The excessive price rising is only a result of controlling everything by the Government. The Government is making people afraid of everything with a result that there are hoardings, people already raise prices as they don't know, what the Government will decide about the maximum prices and more...

Let the markets do their jobs... High demands will raise the price, too expensive goods will lower demands and lower prices( in normal markets). The strong will survive the weak will go down.

I don't know where they shop or survey prices, but at local Makro, not seeing price surges at all. Checking receipts, last month, past week, yesterday & today ...

eggs #0 last month 30ct / 153, then 141, now (19th) 145, today 144

chicken breast/skin on was 95 / kg, didn't notice that price or would have passed

chicken breast/skin on today 77 / kg

pork tenderloin today 145 / kg, 2 weeks ago 139/kg

Local fresh markets usually cheaper across the board.

As the government bungles the fuel crisis, the Thai public will be breaking out the torches and pitchforks soon.

I will check the prices in Makro next time I need to do a monthly shop.

At the moment Auzzie beef and lamb is about 350 to 450 a kg depending in the type, minced beef is about 350 kg the last time I shopped there.

I don't know how farangs can eat the local muck, maybe if it is hidden in strong spices and curry it passes as meat.

Yea, same, and just came back from Makro. #3-4 eggs, 111 baht. Got #0 for 146, and 2 baht more that last week. If under 150 baht, I'm happy, as they cost 153 baht a month ago.

Bought Swiss cheese, and was the cheapest I've ever seen it, and not even on sale. Whole roasted chicken yesterday, 119 baht, same price when initially offered 3 months ago maybe. I think the 5 Star, in the parking lot, will be going out of business soon, surprised it hasn't already. Rolled Oats still the same price.

Bought Aro Vintage cheddar in Makro yesterday, down from 200bht to 149bht. 3kg for under 900bht, fridge full.

yes, noticed all the ARO cheeses, next to the MainLand brand. I can see Makro discontinue carrying name brands. Same with Caesar dressing I got the other day, now ARO brand, along with Oats I got today.

Really just shows how much the name brands price gouge.

Freezer is full up, or I would have picked up a nice Chuck Picanha @ 590 / kg. Makes a nice roast beef, but I also don't need any beef tallow. Stocked up on beef last week.

Buying at the big Lotus 2X a month, cost has gone up over the last year about 25%.
We only buy things there that we can't get locally. Except the rotisserie chicken, still 130baht.
They are 200baht from the lady on the back road so .....

Otherwise, I'm out the door @ 4am and hit the night market, 3-4 times a week.

No change to speak of in those prices for the last year or more.
32 #4 eggs are still 120baht

They tried that last year, but I don't think Mainland was prepared to package enough in the ARO packaging for them.

How about the Thai-Chinese families relax the control of their uber greedy hands. For instance bank mortgaes in the Uk are around 6% I can get 4.25% on my savings here by shopping around a decent spread. In Thailand where the big boys own all the banks they loan out at the same rate but give interest around 1.5-2%. And the same cartels gouge at every instance from conveneicne stores to supermarkets and every stage in between and buy the election at a reputed $2 billion bung. They are as rich as Croesus whilst the Thai's struggle ever more but they own and control the systen lock stock and barrel.

The savings spread take was estimated at around £7 -10 billion sterling last year "excess" profits. The rich just get richer....

It would be accurate to call price hikes here Trumpflation. The very dumb man who promised to bring prices down is inflating them worldwide with his "Iran Fiasco". And now he seems to be lying about negotiations that are taking place with Iran when all he is trying to do is desperately buy himself an off-ramp from a completely failed war.

No regime change. Check.

No destruction of the atomic material. Check.

No public uprising. Check.

Just billions spent and nothing gained. Great job, clown man.

Let's chalk that up to one of the 100 or so wars, bombings, and invasions that America has led since 1945. All have been lost.

The persons who disliked my post are not aware that the prices will increase what ever the Thai Government tries to do apparently. It is unstoppable, as all overthe globe it will be the same.

Get ready for the mother of all price rises, as fertilizer runs out countrywide in a few weeks. Next years rice harvest will be decimated among others
