Foreign Resident Reports Rooster Noise on Koh Samui

A foreign resident living in Mae Nam, Koh Samui, in Surat Thani province has filed a formal complaint to Koh Samui Municipality over persistent noise from crowing roosters, which he says has disrupted his sleep for around seven months. The complaint, dated 24 June, has attracted attention from local residents and social media users.

According to the submitted document, the resident reports that approximately three roosters in a nearby area have been crowing repeatedly from the early hours of the morning, starting around 3am. The birds are said to crow frequently at intervals of about every three minutes, creating ongoing disturbance throughout the early morning period. The complainant states that the issue has continued daily for several months.

The resident further claims that the prolonged noise has affected his ability to rest properly and has led to ongoing discomfort and sleep deprivation. He also notes visible signs of fatigue, including dark under-eye circles and physical stress symptoms, which he attributes to the extended period of disrupted sleep. The situation has reportedly persisted for around seven months without resolution.

The complaint indicates that the resident has previously raised the matter with relevant local authorities, and that officials have visited the area to investigate. However, he maintains that the noise problem has continued despite these inspections, prompting him to submit a formal request for further action under municipal powers.

The Daily News reported that the local authorities have not yet issued a detailed public response regarding the case. It remains unclear what measures, if any, will be taken to address the issue or mediate between the parties involved. The situation is still under review.

Roosters, no problem. The bloody loudspeakers at 5-6am EVERY morning, and if there is a wedding, funeral or monk initiation are far worse.

Even in very expensive waikiki beach in hawaii feral chickens or "pets" etc crow all the time ...it's not just the thai islands or rural areas. Annoying yes and in Hawaii expensive to remove as well. Lots of them live in the public parks and along waterways and of course tourists think they are cute and feed them and their dozens of chicks which keeps the flock growing and the money flowing. Never really understood why Hawaii can't just hire a few thais or fillipinos with a net to go catch the birds for way way less $$. Have a BBQ.

Instead of funding a specific eradication campaign just for Waikīkī, the City and County of Honolulu has spent tens of thousands of dollars on $50,000 contracts with Sandwich Isle Pest Solutions to manage feral chickens island-wide. Private property owners in areas like Waikīkī can hire these contractors for subsidized trapping and disposal. [1]

The specific costs associated with trapping and removing feral chickens in Honolulu include:

  • Initial Pilot Program: In a previous trial, Honolulu spent $7,000 to catch 67 chickens, which came out to approximately $104 per bird. [1]

I was looking at a newly constructed village recently for a house and i allready spotted one finished house with a rooster in a cage in the garden. I pitied their neighbours and gave the rest of the village a mis.

I wonder how many complaints he's made about the 6 AM village chit-chat sessions on the village PA systems. biggrin

This is because some one is keeping roosters in their houses, unlike here' in pattaya, what the locals calls this bird ''nok kawawo'' the super noisy myna bird that are everywhere and start their ear splitting calls 6 am in 10 min. intervals.

Then there is the whooping bird, day and night. Why don't humans just use ear plugs?

noise such as this can be quite a problem, it also includes dogs barking and scooters with no effective muffler

Ok, and your point is?

This is an area of the island that is primarily rural with a coastal village. It is not a developed tourist town like Chaweng. Outside of the village, it is much like a fisher's village. Chickens and other animals are likely to be found. When people move to small rural areas, especially mixed agricultural zones, they are unreasonable to expect that all rural life must cease because it has sounds and smells they do not like. I have a person 2 sois over who has chickens in his backyard. They sometimes wake me up. He was there long before I was and before the condos and hotels were built. He has every right to keep his chickens. If the farang is unhappy, he should have researched the negatives of living in a small rural village first.

How did you do it ?

A 22 caliber rifle. Recommend it. Not only is it a great sport but it rids the world of these pestilent animals.

And IMHO, people who haven't bee raised in a rural environment shouldn't retire in a Thai village. Stay in your Sukhumvit condo, or under a London bridge if you cant afford the former.

This was on a hilltop in Koh Samui where there are a lot of high-end villas, not a rural area up in the sticks.

You are descending further into the abyss of violence. Although it does not surprise me, you offer idiotic advice. It is illegal, with some exceptions, for a foreigner to own or to use a firearm in a domestic setting. Worse, is that unless one is a skilled marksman, using a firearm in an area with other living beings risks wounding or killing them. Are you trying to get people injured or in legal trouble?

I clearly have over 8 years experience with Thai roosters as I actually live in the country where they're seen, and heard every day. Like the predecessors, assuming doesn't work. Like I said, I have no problems with them as I rise early anyway, but I can see where many will lose sleep because of it, so need to adapt somehow. Roosters making noise all day only hurts those who work night shifts and who go to bed too late, trying to get the 8 hours in which many need.

It's easy enough to deal with the normal roosters as they have a fairly predictable schedule, it's the fighting cocks that are the problem, the ones that go off all day long. They have no place in this world of ours.

Calm down. Take a deep breath. It happened a long time ago, nobody got hurt as I exercised great care as a marksman, and the problem was eradicated, with skill and dedication.

You talk about some sort of abyss of violence, and yet you very likely consume meat and pork on a daily basis. Have you ever thought about that?

The problem isn't the birds but the owners who allow their animals to do things that bother people. Animal fighting is a despicable practice that should be ostracized.

Thank you. Nothing about masculinity it was just about peace of mind and quiet which are things that I cherish.

My guess is that you would not have any qualms about eating chicken, but somehow killing very annoying and noisy roosters is evil to you. The owner of rhe land they were on asked them first to get rid of them, and when they didn't comply I took action into my own hands, with his blessing. He even supplied the rifle and ammunition. And I have to admit it was a whole lot of fun.

Did it make you feel like a man to punch down on people from Myanmar? You would never have shot the chickens if they belonged to Thai people.

He should move back to the Big City, where he obviously is from. Roosters, Ducks, Birds, Goats, Geckos, Lizards, Frogs, Crickets, Bees, Chickens, it goes on and on. They all make noise. When you move to a tropical island in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand you get the environment that comes with it. The Thai people, their animals and the natural habitat were here first.

don't forget the snakes, they will chase them back to the city, sure! 😉

So for me it's strictly off-limits to complain about any event at a temple, or at a funeral, ordination ceremony, or wedding. All you're gonna accomplish is making yourself a social pariah, and possibly getting your butt kicked.

And complaining to a cranked up meth head Thai and his mates about their non wedding related noise , will result in an immediate drop in volume, an apology and a wai? Note .. Adopting an angry "school teacher" tone of voice will of course result in uncontrolled laughter from the miscreants if you are lucky, or possibly severe beating if your luck has run out

So where would one complain about snakes ? and this damn heat,? and the overly spicy food ?and the fact that their english is less than perfect? and there are too many motorbikes, and why so many foreigners? the list is endless and reflects very badly on Thailand.

They need a one stop service centre to handle these legitimate complaints and a truck load of "brands" gift baskets to hand out as apologies

As a responsible owner I gave my roosters a very serious talking to,I laid the law down , and made it clear that any of that "cock a doodle doo" nonsense would not be tolerated and would result in " consequences"

I cannot believe that they disrespected me by ignoring my orders,. , I'm a holder of her Britannic Majesty's Passport for gods sake. .

They are now in line for a damn good thrashing and have only themselves to blame

Nobody, and I mean nobody is twisting any foreigner's arm and telling them they have to leave the clean and police regulated (nanny-state) confines of the West to move to Asia - anywhere in Asia - where they will encounter domestic farm animals as well as wild animals.......all of which make noises.

Thank goodness the "foreign resident living in Mae Nam, Koh Samui, in Surat Thani province" didn't decide to hunker down next to a pig farm.

I have absolutely zero sympathy (as will the Koh Samui Municipality, the Thai residents, and Thai social media users) who more than likely are suggesting that Khun Foreigner move back to wherever he came from. I second that motion! thumbsup

Caveat: Our neighbor raises chickens and the roosters start at 3 AM. I only hear them if I get up to pee. That noise goes in one ear and out the other. Zzzz Zzzzz Zzzzz

This is something I'm incredibly proud of to this day, there are literally not enough roosters in the world to go around killing.

They are one of the most annoying animals on the planet especially the fighting breeds.

From my point of view possessing roosters if you live within 200 M of another human being is a violation that warrants that your roosters be exterminated. We all have our pet peeves and roosters for me are at the very top of my list.

You are lucky someone didn't take you out
