Man Dies After 10 on 1 Attack in Nong Khai Songkran Fight

A 26 year old man has died after being attacked by a group of around 10 people during a street altercation in Nong Khai on April 15, 2026. The victim, known as Sef and from Udon Thani, was in the province celebrating Songkran when the assault occurred at approximately 21:00 on Prajak Sillapakom Road in Mueang district. He later died from brain haemorrhage and blood infection despite medical efforts.

According to reports, the violence stemmed from a minor incident in which the victim accidentally bumped into a member of the group and apologised. The situation escalated when the other party remained dissatisfied and allegedly attacked him as part of a group. The assault took place near a Chinese school area during Songkran festivities.

Further details from the victim’s wife, who has since given a statement to police, describe the attack as a 10 against 1 assault. She shared emotional posts following his death, noting the couple had been married for one year and had a young child. The family had been approaching their wedding anniversary before the incident occurred.

Medical teams attempted to save the victim’s life but confirmed he later died due to severe injuries, including bleeding on the brain and subsequent infection in the bloodstream. Authorities at Mueang Nong Khai Police Station have been reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved.

Police have reported on 17 April, that 9 of the 10 suspects had been arrested and were being questioned. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and proceed with legal action against those responsible. Officers indicated that further developments are expected as questioning continues.

The case has drawn attention due to the severity of the attack and its origin from a minor dispute during a public festival. It highlights ongoing concerns around safety during large celebrations such as Songkran, where alcohol and crowd conditions can escalate tensions.

NBT reported that authorities are expected to complete formal charges following the interrogation process. Police have stated they are working to ensure all perpetrators are held accountable under the law.

If they see a fight developing Thai's will go in even though in even if they don't know what its about but it needs to be in a group incase one of them is battered. Was only a matter of time someone was beaten to death.

Songkran used to be a celebration, now it's more like an excuse for mob stupidity and violence by both Thais and foreigners.

This is a particularly extreme example of that violence, and it raises the question about how authorities can address this in the future without destroying the spirit of the Songkran Festival.

It won't be addressed.

But it obviously does exist. Could just be being in the wrong place at the wrong time?

99.9% of the violence here is one Thai on another. Very little violence here that's perpetrated against foreigners, it's fairly uncommon.

I feel infinitely safer walking the the streets of Hua Hin or Bangkok then I do most large cities in America. 50 x safer.

Lierally hundreds of clips out there depicting violent Songkran clashes. Often it seems not to be just gangs, but any chancer idiots joining in to get a gratuitous kick/stomp on anyone who can't defend themselves.

It takes a pretty lowlife mentality to kick a guy around when he's on the ground. Real street scum.

10 on 1 isn't a fight, it's a murder.

That many people all jumping-in makes me suspect this was a gang and not just a bunch liquored-up youths.

Motorcycle Gang, for sure.

Gang behavior written all over it.

Prosecutre them for murder, to start with. It's ridiculous how lenient punishment is when it comes to violence and the perps are not foreign.

Not really surprising, You have to remember Thailand is the underbelly of SE Asia. Only the poor expats, or desperate go there. And the violence is par for the course.

So, if that is what you believe 1. Why are you still in Thailand? 2. If you are not in Thailand, why are you posting on this thread? Are you just trolling or just "need to get a life?"

Songkran had nothing to do with this. Boys fighting in gangs do. Foreigners can't comprehend helping out your mates and think everyone has a warrior spirit.

Thai boys learn kickboxing at school. They do military service and learn to kill. There is no point in thinking they have their honor to worry about. But they are taught to kill in packs from an early age.

If a foreigner attacks a Thai then the "Thai Netizens" are all over it like a plague. Where is the outrage from Thais over this incident?

'Netizen outrage' is a term coined by the online media to 'inflate' the importance of a story.

i.e. Nok gives Somyot kick in the nuts - Somyot is a Doctor - no one care's but the story needs momentum - "netizens outraged by Brutal assault on Thai Doctor".... more often than not people are 'outraged' at the idea someone is 'outraged' by half of this silly stuff...

Thais fight in group. Animal instinct.

Off topic, but I go for a 90 minutes walk every morning. There is one unavoidable hot spot as far as dogs are concerned. It appears that it's a dogs meeting place ( feeding strays ) If one dog is there they don't don't take any notice of me. When the dirty herd moves in they all want a piece of the action. ( me ) Thai males fight exactly the same way. If your up north don't have anything to do with them because if they've been drinking lao kaow they could hit you with anything, maybe kill you.

I've been living up north for about 20 years and haven't even had a bad stare directed at me, let alone any murder attempts. Based on your observations, I feel I've been cheated and missing out on things. Who should I complain to about this?

It seems that your exposure to Thai news and the opinions of Thai people is solely through the lens of this forum. I admit it's a bit of a bugger not understanding the language here, but if one doesn't even make the effort, I can appreciate why some never graduate from the "they don't like us" school of thought.

I live in the country here, so feel safe anyway, but if in large cities, I feel much safer back home. Never had any trouble living around NYC and San Antonio, in and around those cities for work and leisure for 62 years, but here they'll kill you for the slightest thing from that weak ego, intentional homicide as much here as anywhere. Personally I've never had any trouble anywhere, as I respect all others and walk with confidence, where the opposite of that has you looking like a victim anywhere. Most of the violence here is local against local.

Most here do not know how to fight. You can see this almost daily in the news, where they have to have a gang to fight another, and flailing punches and kicks that aren't learned from training but wild. They all think because this is a Muay Thai place they can emulate but only consistent training prepares you for fighting with any strategy. Otherwise it's a brawl where few know what they're doing. The reason they gang up is having no fathers teaching them respect for life itself. They fight in packs from cowardice.
