Man Dies After 10 on 1 Attack in Nong Khai Songkran Fight

Featured Replies

A 26 year old man has died after being attacked by a group of around 10 people during a street altercation in Nong Khai on April 15, 2026. The victim, known as Sef and from Udon Thani, was in the province celebrating Songkran when the assault occurred at approximately 21:00 on Prajak Sillapakom Road in Mueang district. He later died from brain haemorrhage and blood infection despite medical efforts.

According to reports, the violence stemmed from a minor incident in which the victim accidentally bumped into a member of the group and apologised. The situation escalated when the other party remained dissatisfied and allegedly attacked him as part of a group. The assault took place near a Chinese school area during Songkran festivities.

Further details from the victim’s wife, who has since given a statement to police, describe the attack as a 10 against 1 assault. She shared emotional posts following his death, noting the couple had been married for one year and had a young child. The family had been approaching their wedding anniversary before the incident occurred.

Medical teams attempted to save the victim’s life but confirmed he later died due to severe injuries, including bleeding on the brain and subsequent infection in the bloodstream. Authorities at Mueang Nong Khai Police Station have been reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved.

Police have reported on 17 April, that 9 of the 10 suspects had been arrested and were being questioned. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and proceed with legal action against those responsible. Officers indicated that further developments are expected as questioning continues.

The case has drawn attention due to the severity of the attack and its origin from a minor dispute during a public festival. It highlights ongoing concerns around safety during large celebrations such as Songkran, where alcohol and crowd conditions can escalate tensions.

NBT reported that authorities are expected to complete formal charges following the interrogation process. Police have stated they are working to ensure all perpetrators are held accountable under the law.

Songkran used to be a celebration, now it's more like an excuse for mob stupidity and violence by both Thais and foreigners.

This is a particularly extreme example of that violence, and it raises the question about how authorities can address this in the future without destroying the spirit of the Songkran Festival.

As I mentioned before, I gave up on Songkran when I saw gangs of youths fighting with heavy sticks in Pattaya. I was sure they had been on the beer or whatever for a spell. The Wan Lai isn't playing anymore and has become somewhat grotesque here and there, with bullying and assault . Many many have lots of fun, but here and there are pockets where it is well out of control.

The coward curs that were involved should be given the same treatment, however being Thailand it will probably be a few wai's at the temple.

10 on 1 isn't a fight, it's a murder.

That many people all jumping-in makes me suspect this was a gang and not just a bunch liquored-up youths.

Ok, but now see to that every single one of them get a minimum of 10 years in the slammer and 500k each in fine. That will serve as a deterrent.

Thais fight in group. Animal instinct.

Prison time and fines won't take away that wolf pack mentality when Thais fight. We see it time and time again involving foreigners, but seems a Thai will do for a good head stomping.

Although I understand where you're coming from I have to say that I've never experienced or witnessed any form of violence in Hua Hin over the course of 14 years.

A decent education would be a good start.

Plus reparation for the loss of a father and his now inability to raise his child.

Personally, they all need to be on their knees hands tie behind their backs National T.V. a 6 feet hole in front their heads chop off with a dull blade.

Waste of time and money serving time as to the fine all ten if they work ten years could never reach that amount.

The ten are the waste product of their cultural upbringing here they will demand more than contribute to their society.😇

Best idea yet. Too bad it would never happen.

Yes Songkran was a time a lot of years back when you had small kids by the side of the road throwing water at you

Now it's been commercially taken over by yobs and Tourists especially in Pattaya and Phuket with spray guns hoses and alcohol involved not fun anymore for the locals and ex-pats who live and work there

As can been seen from the media outlets

Agree, but what do you think the 5M totally was for?

Real men fight one on one, in the true warrior spirit. Cowards, weaklings and pussies fight in big gangs. It is safe and free of risk for the vermins and hoodlums.

You are totally wrong! Prison and fines work everywhere, as long as they are hard and big enough. What´s wrong here is that the law enforcement sucks, it´s possible to bride your way to freedom or a much more lenient sentence as well as the set real punishment is also far too lenient.

But it obviously does exist. Could just be being in the wrong place at the wrong time?

10 on 1? Sounds about the the right odds to make sure you're going to win in this "Land of Smiles". Cowardly species as this type of attack seems fairly regular - you never seem to hear of 1 on 1! 😠

Sadly this type situation has nothing to do with festivities, Its a typical scenario whenever a fight starts. More common in tourist areas but not always involving tourist. Same with the rival school gangs. Its common that it's 5 to 10 against 1. Its also typical that Thai's like to kick the person on the ground in the face and head or hit them with chairs or bottles. Seldom does anything significant happen and law enforcement and courts should be ashamed to claim they represent everyday citizens in these situations.

So, he apologized and these morons were still not satisfied?

Amazing, in the Land of Smiles.

May he rest in peace.

Same here. Also, with the influx of French Arabs and other Farangs who have no idea on how to control their behavior, I am fine with sitting at home catching up on my Audible book list. Two more days to go.

What specific area did you see this?

Well there you go. Now it has escalated into a death.

Lierally hundreds of clips out there depicting violent Songkran clashes. Often it seems not to be just gangs, but any chancer idiots joining in to get a gratuitous kick/stomp on anyone who can't defend themselves.

I admire your conviction but don't subscribe to it
