Norwegian man living rough in Nonthaburi to return home

A Norwegian man who spent more than two years sleeping at temples and in public areas around Pak Kret, Nonthaburi, is expected to return home after Thai immigration officers helped him contact his embassy.

Odd Stian Hesseberg, 44, was located at Wat Klang Kret on 7 August after social media users raised concern about a foreign man sleeping near the Pak Kret waterfront. Immigration authorities are now coordinating with the Norwegian Embassy to arrange his return to Norway in line with Thai law.

Hesseberg told reporters that he arrived in Thailand alone about two and a half years ago to meet a female friend in Nakhon Sawan. He said he later lost contact with her and travelled to Nonthaburi.

Passport loss and long overstay

He said a bag containing his passport and other documents was stolen in Nonthaburi, leaving him unable to resolve his situation. He subsequently lived rough, sleeping at temples and along the waterfront, while wanting to return to Norway but not knowing where to seek help.

Immigration officers checked his records after finding him at Wat Klang Kret. The records show that he entered Thailand on 3 March 2023 on a 30-day tourist visa, then received an extension allowing him to remain until 16 May 2023.

His immigration status now records an overstay of 1,179 days. Authorities said they are questioning Hesseberg while working with the Norwegian Embassy, to resolve outstanding issues and making arrangements for him to leave Thailand.

Temple staff had tried to help

Staff at the temple said they had previously attempted to assist Hesseberg's return, including arranging transport to the Norwegian Embassy around three months ago.

They said they had become concerned for his wellbeing because he was alone and regularly sleeping in public places.

After immigration officers took him away, Hesseberg thanked temple staff and local residents who had supported him during his time in Pak Kret. He said he was pleased that, after more than two years, he would finally be able to go back to Norway.

Indeed- I hope he receives the support he needs and that he is able to gain some security

==>While all valid comments and commendable, there is still the problem of him turning down the transportation to the Norwegian embassy. Comes across like a self-centered adult that never grew up.

Or he may be too proud, or embarrassed, to get help from Thais for that transport, maybe he was trying through his family/friends instead, without any luck.

All I say, we don't know the full story here, or what went through his mind.

Begs the question of where Immigration was for 1,179 days?

Thailand subsidizes the costs of learning Norwegian language in order Thai women to marry Norwegian men and live in Norway.

Poor guy. Fell for a Thai romance scam. Seems he met her through Thaifriendly. Why? More than 90% of the ladies advertising on TF, that they are from Nakhon Sawan are not actually there.

But still, how could he not help himself? He could have found the address of the Norwegian Embassy, easily. He could have stepped into a police station, tourist police station or the immigration office to find adequate help.

I don`t get it.🤔

Yes, it does matter. I wish him well, but I should imagine that there may be others here on overstay, tempted to live rough and hope the authorities will forego any fines and put them on a plane home to their own country.

So you're being nosey on behalf of other dodgy farangs?

The rules are still the same, if they catch you, it's a fine or jail in lieu, then detention at IDC until you can come up with (the money for) a ticket home.

Obviously busy picking the easier, more obvious, low-hanging skint and trapped fruit.

If it is anything like the UK's rules, where any repatriation travel and expenses provided by the government needs to be paid back, otherwise it's more time in court, more detention and other restrictions on freedom. Maybe this guy didn't like those terms before but has no choice now.

I guess you were at the spots where drug addicts do their thing, and live on the streets. All countries have some of them, I'm not surprised. Some fall between cracks in their country, no matter how rich the country is.

Don't understand why you would think there would be none.

Rich country, very rich in fact, very very rich in terms of per capita. Fairly strait laced society (?), heavily focused on outdoor sports in particular winter sports. Small population, harder to fall between racks because the cracks can be made very small.

I mean, it’s a stereotype obviously, London also has a lot of wealth but also plenty of homeless. But Oslo isn’t big, it’s small and compact and I’m talking about the centre of town around the main train station, not down back streets or a ghetto area.

Anyway, off topic, but if this guy decides to sleep rough when he gets home, he won’t be alone from my experience.

Once again a valid comment, I doubt very much there would be any terms that would satisfy him other than a free flight home, permanent social benefits (Norway), and a return flight to Thailand or to a country of his choice. I have an acquantance living in Pattaya who has not reached the age of retirement and is being taken care of by the Norway government.

He can join the ranks of homeless people sleeping rough in Oslo, particularly around the train station.

I was shocked at the numbers when I visited 2 years ago. Perhaps because I envisaged there being none at all.

We do have a rush of Romani people every year as well, and other beggars from other countries, especially during summer. I suspect in the future there will be more cases like this in Asia. It depends on how quickly they find them and send them out.

Quite remarkable he went under the radar for so long, and as we have also seen with others lately. When he is back, he will still have to go through the system before getting whatever benefits he qualifies for. And if he has not maintained his rights in Norway from before, getting disability pension could be a much longer and more complicated process. It is certainly not just coming back and immediately collecting a disability pension.

We do indeed.

I doubt he even qualifies for a disability pension, which has been more and more difficult to obtain these last years.

My guess is that he will temporarily be taken care of by NAV, and get his monthly payment from them, while he must apply for work.

I can't see this guy becoming one of the homeless on the streets. Surely he won't choose to become one, when he will be taken care of by NAV.

After his 10 years ban from entering Thailand, I won't be surprised if we will see him back here again. Hopefully he has learned his lesson by then.

Good, BYE BYE, be a vagrant in your home country. He certainly wouldn't be in TH, if TH had a few months of Norwegian winter.

I share this sentiment. He got by for a few years as a bum in TH, time to take it back to Norway.

Norway has an extremely low unemployment rate so if Oddball wants to get back to working, best place for him is there. Maybe someday he can come back with some money and have a proper holiday.

Because he was in Nakhon Sawan , before he left for Nonthaburi, according to the News article.

That is not a fixation at all.

I never wrote anything about FB. Just TF.

Just contact the Ladies from Nakhon Sawan and find out yourself , if they are real or fake.

Arrange dates with them and find out yourself if they are really in Nakhon Sawan or not.

I assumed that you had found some confirmed link between this chap's demise and a failed relationship with one of the "Ladies from Nakhon Sawan"

Married since 1991, living in Nakhon Sawan since 1995 and unfortunately now widower since June 3 2026.

Yes, it was too short, indeed. But with gallbladder cancer, there was no chance for her to survive.

More to this than we are being told... he had his chance to get the embassy to help him long ago but flaked out. He sounds like a useless pile of manure to me. Thailand just helped him out to get rid of him, which I completely understand.

Thanks for that. It does say, "the woman allegedly stole his money". Maybe he didn't have a whole lot to get stolen in the first place, or it was one great big clean out quite early in his alleged 2-years of passportless limbo?
