Phuket CCTV shows foreigner taking spirit house offerings

CCTV footage from Phuket has shown a foreign man removing food and drink offerings from a spirit house outside a home in the Kata area of Karon subdistrict.

The footage was posted on Facebook by user Bank Marlboro on the night of August 5. He said the incident happened outside a friend's home, and shared the clip under the description of a Phuket spirit house theft.

Footage shows man taking offerings

The man is seen walking along the street before changing direction and heading towards the spirit house. He appeared to look around to check whether anyone was watching before approaching the shrine and taking several items.

He removed a small plastic tray containing food and what appeared to be a bottled drink. He then walked to a second spirit house nearby but left after finding that it contained no offerings.

In the footage, the foreigner is wearing a long-sleeved shirt with its sleeves rolled up, dark shorts, glasses and trainers. He was carrying two plastic bags.

Spirit houses are common outside Thai homes, businesses and other premises. Food, drinks and other items are often placed there as offerings, and are regarded by many Thais as a gesture of respect towards guardian spirits.

Online reactions range from anger to humour

The video prompted divided reactions from Thai social media users. Some said the act should be regarded as theft regardless of the small value of the food and drink taken.

Others took a more charitable view, suggesting that giving food to a person in need could itself be considered an act of merit.

Many commenters responded with jokes, saying the spirits would follow the man home to reclaim their offerings.

A reminder on local customs

For foreign residents and visitors, the episode is a reminder that spirit houses are not simply decorative garden features. Even where food or drinks appear to have been left unattended, they may have religious or cultural significance to the household or business that placed them there.

Visitors who are unsure about an item left at a shrine should avoid touching or removing it without permission. The same applies to offerings at temples, roadside shrines and other places of worship, where local customs can differ but respect for the site is expected.

Most likely a “I can live in Thailand on 30k Thai baht” type.

Disgusting behavior for a foreigner.

Well, I live happily on about 25k baht/month and I don't have to resort to stealing food (I can afford to eat out every day...)

Jail time and deportation is waiting for this scumbag.

why jail? little harm was done. Jail is for serious offenders not for mentally ill people. He must be in bad shape to steal rotten old food that will make him ill if he consumes it. It costs money to keep people in jail. Send him home.

well, you actually can perfectly (and quite easily) live with 30k month in Thailand, no problem. Just don't expect foreign standard luxury.

A matter of time before the 30k a month crowd tries to justify their decision.

Good for you but not me.

Personally, I saw 'locals' doing exactly the same thing during the COVID era. Instead of looking down my nose at them, simply turned around and gave them some of the food and money that I had with me.

If it were a foreigner, I would have done the same.

In fact, it reminds me of someone I know. During the same period, I thought that I caught a glance of him rummaging through a bin, but didn't want to embarrass him and myself by asking about it. A bit stupid when I think of it.

Worse because I didn't ever see him again after that...and I'd been seeing him around in various places since 1998. sad

I would not begrudge any nationality in need, but a Thai would have more appreciation of what the spirit house is about. A foreigner likely not.

The foreigner may well have fallen on bad times or have mental issues.

I totally agree. The man may not have any understanding about Buddism and its culture and saw the food as a free gift!

Like the Honesty Boxes alongside footpaths, mountain tracks and nature trails in the UK.

That is not a living standard, that is survival mode.

Then it’s time for the foreigner to go back home.

If he has to steal food I think booking a flight home might be an issue.

Does anyone have any idea what nationality he is?

In my country, it's the most desperate thieves who empty the collection boxes. The question is, what is such a destitute person doing in Thailand? A related question: how could he have financed his trip if he finds himself in this situation?

Hey, my father said a man is nothing but a collection of anecdotes. So here goes:

We stayed in a basic hotel in the provinces with relatives. They had nothing vegetarian. So I was siting in the lobby while the others ate. And I noticed that the maids had put out four plastic trays waiting to be delivered to the spirits.

It was pretty spare fare...but I wasn't busted!

Ruin what?

This kind of thing has had zero effect on my life here. As the article said, many Thais laughed about it. The pilferer looked like he needed a few extra calories.

And many Thais were deeply offended. I was referring to the reputation of farangs, but you knew that but decided to comment anyways. Hmmm.

What a total plonker. I wish morons like him wouldn't come to Thailand and ruin it for the rest of us. How could anyone in their right mind (??) do something so obviously wrong? One has to assume he was not in his right mind, and may be in great need of psychiatric therapy. As Olmate rightly says, it seems that some on this forum might like to palm the occasional five from the offering plate - most people know that is senseless after their fifth birthday.

Definitely Asian so us farangs can’t get the blame this time. 🤷🏼

Something wrong with this guy, not stealing out of need or greed, but just to do it. Some kind of compulsive behavior, the way some people shoplift - which he probably does.

According to the Chinese lunisolar calendar, the Hungry Ghost Month is the 7th month, which runs from Aug 13 to Sep 10. Looks like someone got released from hell slightly earlier.

How absolutely awful, terrible behaviour. You are expected to respect the spirit house and starve! As for me, I am thirsty, I think I will reach through my neighbour's fence, and snatch the half bottle of bright green Fanta, enriched with a dozen drowned wasps to get a sugar hit!

That wasn't done out of need or poverty. That was a farang who had no respect for another people's culture or religion.

He knew it was wrong.

I didn't think he looked 'farang', and seemed well organized, reasonably dressed and efficient, almost like he does this regularly and is like a paper round for him.

In Russia, giving offerings is different. The offerings give to you and not need to be ghost. 👻

I'm not Christian, but... what would Jesus do?
If a man needs to steal old, perhaps rotten food to survive, who really has the problem? Is it society that lets things get this bad for the guy?
Is it us, because we don't offer a hand to these people?

Or do we just say, 'Screw him. It's his problem. Let's lock him up!'

To show respect for the locals, he should refrain from stealing.

It's a classic joke that Russians make about how great life in the USSR is because it's the opposite of everywhere else.

Are the locals respecting him?
Or are they ignoring a serious mental health problem, hoping someone else will care for him?
Should he have been let into the Kingdom in the first place? Who knows? Should we remove another layer of privacy when entering a country by declaring our mental health?
Obviously, the man has a problem. And it's just as obvious that the problem is not being handled correctly.
