Phuket CCTV shows foreigner taking spirit house offerings

CCTV footage from Phuket has shown a foreign man removing food and drink offerings from a spirit house outside a home in the Kata area of Karon subdistrict.

The footage was posted on Facebook by user Bank Marlboro on the night of August 5. He said the incident happened outside a friend's home, and shared the clip under the description of a Phuket spirit house theft.

Footage shows man taking offerings

The man is seen walking along the street before changing direction and heading towards the spirit house. He appeared to look around to check whether anyone was watching before approaching the shrine and taking several items.

He removed a small plastic tray containing food and what appeared to be a bottled drink. He then walked to a second spirit house nearby but left after finding that it contained no offerings.

In the footage, the foreigner is wearing a long-sleeved shirt with its sleeves rolled up, dark shorts, glasses and trainers. He was carrying two plastic bags.

Spirit houses are common outside Thai homes, businesses and other premises. Food, drinks and other items are often placed there as offerings, and are regarded by many Thais as a gesture of respect towards guardian spirits.

Online reactions range from anger to humour

The video prompted divided reactions from Thai social media users. Some said the act should be regarded as theft regardless of the small value of the food and drink taken.

Others took a more charitable view, suggesting that giving food to a person in need could itself be considered an act of merit.

Many commenters responded with jokes, saying the spirits would follow the man home to reclaim their offerings.

A reminder on local customs

For foreign residents and visitors, the episode is a reminder that spirit houses are not simply decorative garden features. Even where food or drinks appear to have been left unattended, they may have religious or cultural significance to the household or business that placed them there.

Visitors who are unsure about an item left at a shrine should avoid touching or removing it without permission. The same applies to offerings at temples, roadside shrines and other places of worship, where local customs can differ but respect for the site is expected.

Well, I live happily on about 25k baht/month and I don't have to resort to stealing food (I can afford to eat out every day...)

Happy? Means different things to different people.

Personally, I won’t live in a fan room and eat msg rice out of a bowl from a street cart nor consider a night out sipping a Chang outside a 7/11. Or better yet, sipping that Chang from the steps on beach road in front of Mikes Mall after splurging on a new wife beater and oversized cargo shorts from the clearance rack.

2nd petty theft news story by a farang in the past week.

Are they really that broke or do they just have a devious nature and enjoy the thrill of theft and trying not to get caught?

Also, do they ever bother to check if there's a camera filming them?

Or they don't care?

A matter of time before the 30k a month crowd tries to justify their decision.

Good for you but not me.

Not justifying anything, just describing what i know. Been in thailand for 13 years now, work here in bkk (yes, i have a "real" work permit etc... :) ), and earn more than the 30k/month mentioned (50k/month is the minimum legally required in my case anyways). Many mid-level office managers don't even earn that amount, and live quite decently with a familly , just not in central Bangkok (like sathorn, where i live), usually in the suburbs. They're just not going to buy their groceries in Villa market or Tops market every week, or go to "tourist oriented" places , 5 star resorts on vacation near the beach on the WE etc...

Bingo!!! All of the above.

Thailand attracts many guys barely scraping by.

Fair enough. Personally I wouldn’t think of living here even on 50k a month. That’s as a single person.

Let alone work here.

When I was working I always earned and invested in my home country. Only spend in Thailand.

You'd have to be desperately hungry (or mentally ill) to eat the food off a spirit house offering plate. Unless it's been recently served, you'd likely end up with a bad case of the trots!

In Malaysia where we have well maintained burial garden , the foreign workers would wait until we are done with prayers and offerings before taking the offerings. These offerings are clean and of quality . Foods we ourselves would consume in our daily living. We would regard the offerings as meritorious deeds both to the esoteric and living. Just remember to wait a while until the joss sticks were burnt out.

Didja buy that new wife beater because you couldn't afford a new wife?

He's probably a Pret (Hungry Ghost) who has come to devour the offerings. Dude has an uncanny resemblance. The Thais should be overjoyed.

Not a good idea to be travelling anywhere If he is a foreigner with mental issues.

Yet no shortage of them around here I suspect.
