Phuket forum seeks 15-day cap on Israeli tourists

Around 200 to 300 Phuket residents gathered at Loma Park on Patong Beach on Friday, 28 August, calling on the government to restrict Israeli tourists to a maximum stay of 15 days.

The demand was made at a forum titled "Save Phuket, Save Patong, Respect Thai Law", where attendees raised concerns about the conduct of some foreign visitors and alleged illegal business activity. The event was closely monitored by uniformed and plainclothes police.

Tourism operators, hotel owners, tuk-tuk drivers, tour guides and local residents attended the meeting, organised by the Phuket Land Protection Group.

Calls for tighter screening

Participants said Phuket should more carefully screen arriving visitors and focus on what they described as high-quality tourist groups. They proposed stricter visa rules, including a 15-day limit for Israeli tourists, to ensure visitors are coming for holidays rather than to operate illegal businesses or take jobs from Thai people.

One tourism operator told the forum that three flights a week bring Israeli visitors to Phuket, each carrying 200 to 300 passengers. According to the speaker, at least 1,000 Israelis arrive each week, with many staying for at least 15 days or more per trip.

The operator acknowledged that Israelis are high-spending tourists, but said residents wanted visitors who holiday in Phuket and then leave rather than remaining for what they considered excessively long periods and competing for local work.

Attendees also complained about what they termed low-quality tourism, saying some visitors use cheap accommodation, buy food from convenience stores and behave arrogantly or disregard the law.

They further argued that a large Israeli presence could discourage European tourists from travelling to Phuket.

Petition handed to Phuket MP

Chalermpong Saendee, the People's Party MP for Phuket Constituency 2, received a petition from the Phuket Land Protection Group after listening to the views raised at the forum.

He said Phuket was a world-class destination drawing visitors from around the globe each year, and that tourism creates income and economic opportunities for the island province.

However, Chalermpong said problems needed to be addressed where people entered Thailand without respecting Thai law. He also referred to investment groups that had entered the market by taking advantage of local businesses, leaving Phuket SMEs and small entrepreneurs facing unfair competition.

Is going to Pai and not seeing too many Jews for your delicate tastes that imporant to you?

Thailand is a good sized country and the areas that indeed do have a high concentration of Israelis are few and far between.

This "Israeli problem" is clearly WAY OVERBLOWN.

Israelis, not Jews. Don't conflate the two. There has always been an Israeli problem.

I'm living on Phangan Island, which might as well be called Tel Aviv on Sea, because the vast majority of foreigners are Israeli. I have absolutely no problem with elderly Israelis (not seen any!), Israeli families with kids (plenty of those). But I do feel 'heavy in my heart' when sitting at a restaurant next to IDF or ex-IDF males.

Did he murder an innocent Gazan child last week? I prefer to eat elsewhere......

No, not at all.

Courteous, well-behaved people are always welcome.

What governments should do, in the interest of their own citizens, is keep out massive influxes of people from failed states who have no interest whatsoever in assimilating and want to plant their flags on other folks' land.

Are they really that bad? Do you have many personal experiences with nasty Israeli tourists? I have never had a confrontation with an Israeli. I've seen rude interactions but those are rare and easy to get over. Maybe it is specific to Phuket and nearby islands?

Okay, that's a little too much drama queen nonsense and judgemental stuff really... don't make assumptions about people you haven't even spoken to, judge them on your interactions with them. You could always not judge them instantly, as even very wise people do not know all ends. Let it go and you'll be happier because you are not clouding your mind with dark imaginings through superficial nonsense like social media. Free your mind and you backside will follow.

To comment: IDF participation is compulsory for all non-Arab Israelis, male and female, excepting some religious groups. The large numbers of young Israeli men on the island are almost all IDF or ex-IDF, that's a fact. The 10 largest 'wellness' centres on the island are owned/established by Israelis (check this for yourself on 'Google').

Why should this island be the R&R destination for these soldiers? I have absolutely zero interest in the conflict between fighting age adults in the Middle East. But when it involves documented murders of kids (on both sides), then it would take a hardened person not to have negative feelings about this.

Your post certainly meets the criteria of your initial description.

I think most who have commented have judged them on the behaviour and interactions.

As far back as I can remember, in Thailand, there has always been an Israeli issue. Rude and arrogant. That was in the '90s. It's nothing new, other than the problem becoming progressively worse.

There was a 51% spike in tourists from Israel in Phuket in July, compared to last year. They will dominate tourism in Phuket, as they do in Pai now.

Just a question of time, unless something is done.

Why does anything need to be done to prevent any nationality to dominate any specific region of Thailand? You are explicitly bigoted towards one group.

Well, being reasonable and objective is obviously far too much of an ask for the fanatics on this forum. Good luck haters as you'll always hate and live in a negative bubble... must be a sad existence.

Is that a serious question? You think that foreigners should be allowed to dominate parts of Thailand?

Unfortunately on this subject your bias is preventing you from reading.

Pot kettle black.

Problems with Chabad?

Enforce Thai laws and fix the probems.

No need to ban Chabad.

Chabad's mission is to provide religious services and community to traveling Jews all over the world.

To ban Chabad anywhere would be an attack on freedom of religion.

Are you against freedom of religion?

I'm not even though I am not religious. I support freedom of religion and also freedom of no religion.

Cheers.

You're being absurd.

I live in Pattaya.

At all times I've been here one nationality of foreigner has been dominant.

It shifts.

It's only a problem if you hate the currently dominant nationality.

That's stupid.

Someone in Chaing Mai is supposed to travel down south for a religious service?

You may as well come out and say you hate Jews.

That's for what we are here to discuss. We'd have nothing to discuss anywhere on the forum if we were all to mind our own business.

I get you now.

Jews are OK with you ONLY if they agree with your tik tok ideology about the conflict there.

Again, I'm personally not a fan of Chabad but they are a very important organization for doing religious services for travelling Jews all over the world. Thus they will attract different sorts of Jews politically as usually where they are, there is no other place for Jewish worship as Jews are a people with a very tiny population globally.

Lol, you clearly don't get it. Your rigid thinking prevents you to understand anyone who doesn't fully agree with you.
