The Royal Thai Embassy in Ankara has asked Georgian authorities to explain why it was formally notified only on July 29 about the death of Thai YouTuber Bowornthat Pengsuk, known as Hlun Solo.
In a statement issued on Friday, July 31, the embassy said Georgian police had never contacted it directly, despite an officer saying police had emailed Georgia's Foreign Ministry on July 14 to request that Thai authorities be informed.
The Ankara embassy handles Thailand's diplomatic and consular affairs involving Georgia.
Embassy learned of missing report on July 28
The embassy said it began making its own enquiries with Georgian authorities on July 28, after learning that Bowornthat had been reported missing.
Thai embassy officials arrived in Tbilisi at 8.30pm on July 29 and went immediately to a Georgian police station. The officer handling the case told them police had sent an email to Georgia's Foreign Ministry on July 14, asking it to notify Thai authorities.
However, the embassy said it had not received any direct message from Georgian police.
At 11am on July 30, embassy officials met representatives from Georgia's Foreign Ministry, who provided an official notification of Bowornthat's death. The letter was dated July 29, written in Georgian and accompanied by an unofficial English translation.
Georgia asked to account for the delay
The embassy has asked Georgian officials to determine why the Foreign Ministry's formal notification was issued on July 29 when police had reportedly contacted the ministry more than two weeks earlier.
It said its consular assistance had been carried out carefully, based on reliable information received from host-country authorities and in line with international law.
The embassy also said it was respecting the privacy of Bowornthat and his family.
