Tourist Assaulted and Robbed at Patong ATM

A foreign tourist was threatened, physically assaulted and robbed at an ATM in Patong, Phuket, in the early hours of 19 March 2026. The incident, captured on CCTV and widely shared online, has raised concerns about safety in one of Thailand’s busiest nightlife districts.

The footage shows a male tourist withdrawing cash at 05:12 near Soi Bangla’s seafood market in Patong, Kathu district, while a Thai man stands behind him. Two additional men then approach, allegedly intimidating and assaulting the tourist before seizing the cash and fleeing.

Reports suggest the attackers may be part of a group that targets tourists, potentially luring them with offers before coercing them into withdrawing money. Authorities have not yet confirmed any links or motives, and the identities of the suspects remain unknown.

The viral clip has provoked strong online reactions, with users calling for rapid arrests and stricter measures to protect visitors. Commentators have warned that repeated incidents of this nature could damage Thailand’s reputation as a safe tourist destination.

Khaosod reported that police are investigating the case, gathering evidence from CCTV, questioning the victim and will pursue legal action against the suspects. No official updates on arrests have been released so far by authorities.

Probably illegals from Myanmar. Thais don't mug foreigners using an ATM before dawn.

That gap that generally makes me feel Thailand is a safe, low crime place, may be narrowing.

Worrying, not because the guy lost money, pretty normal in Thailand, but because of the manner of it. Yeah, I do wonder if there's some history to this incident, rather than it being just a straightforward, out of the blue, robbery at an ATM.

It doesn't look random. From the body language it seems more like the Thai guy was expecting payment for something and when the tourist delayed taking out the money and kept trying to call someone they made a decision to knock him down and steal his wallet. At least from the footage it doesn't appear like he actually withdrew anything from the ATM. Still a crime - but it does not seem as random as the story projects.

Robbing a guy at a ATM machine with CCTV is a bit stupid

Should not take the police long in arresting the guys concerned

Pattaya and Patong Beach seem to have have become the crime capitals of Thailand and perhaps they are best avoided at this point. That certainly applies to the tourist areas of both of those towns.

I agree- it does look rather random- and the victim does look as if he is unsteady on his feet- still no excuse at all for the violence- I hope the RTP catch the scum responsible

My guess is, that the tourist went to withdraw money to cover an unpaid bar bill. After failing to withdraw any money, the bar staff decided to punch him instead.

I am quite sure you are correct.

Those guys were angry, from the beginning.

The drunken Farang owed them money.

He couldn't even stand up without falling down, momentarily.

Never even felt those punches.

Or, was he drugged?

I think not.

Let this be a lesson: Never drink to excess in a foreign country. NEVER.

It's clear from the pictures the guys are forcing him to withdraw money from the ATM. The victim seems drunk or at least is wobblijg on his legs. Unpaid bar Bill?

Well if you are pissessed out of your head, hanging around a red light area at that time of the morning after having been out all night, negotiated with some strange dodgy looking characters, taken money out of an ATM machine in their presence, you almost deserve for things to go wrong.

It is was almost like he was asking for trouble, sill sod.

The only time I allowed a Thai stranger to take me to an ATM to get money where the amount had been agreed upon was once when I had to pay a little pocket money to a uniformed Thai police officer after a little driving incident in my car. 😃

Your video you saw on this matter to you only indicates a robbery?

Hello, what about the pack of young Thai dogs. Not just a robbery? Three dogs harass and then realise the farang is drunk and at that point attack and rob. Low life. Simple.

Wouldn't happen... I never use ATM machines at night. It may be just as risky but I always have plenty cash on me. Usually suffices as I am a bit squeaky tight and no bell ringer.

I agree, I always make sure I have more than enough to carry me through a night out financially, it does attract some types of women though as they find the bulge it makes in my trousers very magnetic.

Guys no matter what their age are very attractive to some types of women if they have a massive bulge in their pocket. 😄

Oh yes, my previous comment should have been, "If one is pissssssed out of their head....." and not "Well if you are pissessed out of your head...."
