Thai Immigration officers have detained an American man identified by authorities, only as Mr Peter at a condominium in Bangkok's Asok area after cancelling his permission to remain in Thailand.
The US authorities had asked Thailand to locate the man, who is wanted for allegedly breaching pre-trial release conditions in a firearms case. He is expected to be deported to face legal proceedings in the United States.
US request led to Bangkok search
The operation was carried out by Immigration Bureau Investigation Division 1 officers working with the US Embassy's overseas criminal investigations unit.
According to Immigration police, US authorities said Peter had allegedly violated conditions imposed while he was awaiting trial in a weapons-related case.
They also said he had previously been arrested in several criminal cases, including possession of and assault with a firearm, credit-card fraud, assaulting a spouse, unlawful detention, and intimidation linked to serious criminal activity.
Thai officers found that he was still living in the country and that his existing permission to stay had not yet expired.
However, Immigration police said he was considered a threat to security and submitted the case to the commander of the Immigration Bureau Investigation Division for his permission to remain in Thailand to be revoked under the law.
Detained at Sukhumvit 21 condominium
Investigators later traced Peter to the Asok area, in Soi Sukhumvit 21, Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana district, Bangkok.
Officers went to the condominium, presented him with the notification cancelling his stay permission and took him into custody. He was transferred to Immigration Bureau Investigation Division 3 for detention while officials coordinate his removal from Thailand.
The authorities said they would work with the relevant agencies to send him back to the United States for the American justice process.
The bureau said it would continue its policy of linking international data to block dangerous people from using Thailand as a hiding place.
