PATHUM THANI: -- The number of victims in a fake dowries case has risen to 13 with a total of four people set to be arrested.

And the "grooms" have now employed the services of a top human rights advocate.

Lawyer Songkan Atchariyasap yesterday led the 13 men to the crime suppression division to make a case against Jariyaporn Buayai.

She got all the victims to transfer dowries to a bank account ahead of prospective marriages.

Each one parted with between 100,000 and 500,000 baht.

One victim - named only as Wiphon - said that he met Jariyaporn through Facebook. After two months he offered to marry her and go into business together.

Songkan said that Jariyaporn would say that her family had fruit growing businesses all over Thailand and she wanted her "partners" to invest. She spent 1-2 months enticing each one.

The fraud involved presenting two people she said were her parents to prospective marriage partners.

A Mr Bunliang and a Mrs Samrong along with the female owner of the bank account called Soiphet are being charged with fraud along with Jariyaporn.

So maybe next time a man is negotiating a dowry with his bride to be and her family, he might ask, "Am I getting married or am I buying a product?"

I know, I know - it's the culture. Except, I didn't pay a dowry when I got married. I took my missus' parents to one side and promised to be the best that I can be. We had a small ceremony with family and 'close friends' and the day was all about my missus us.

I sleep well at night knowing that if I lose everything; my missus (my equal) will have my back. And if for some bizarre reason she doesn't, I won't have regretted anything.

Fascinating case, and highly instructive.

All of the victims were Thai. That must be comforting for many foreign men to see that marriage fraud doesn't just happen to them. It isn't always the case that the guy is a gullible chump. In some cases it is outright fraud.

The parents (or fake parents) were fully aware of what the daughter was doing. They should be thrown in jail and receive lengthy sentences along with their daughter.

Discussed this case with numerous Thai men. When I asked how someone earning 300 baht/day could afford a 100K -300K -600K dowry, they explained that some men go into debt to raise the necessary funds, and if the marriage is dissolved, the debt is not a joint marital debt but the sole responsibility of the husband! :shock1:

Just consider for a moment how hard it would be to convince all those guys to marry her. You would have to look each one of them in the eyes and affect a loving, affectionate, tender, genuine, devoted love for this person, all the while knowing that you were totally duping them. That's nothing short of sociopathic behavior.

I understand sin sot is Thai culture, but it creates a terrible incentive to marry for mercenary reasons, and in my opinion, should be resisted whenever possible.

she made it appear that he was affluent and had a very lucrative fruit business. some of the aspiring husbands even borrowed money to give her as a dowry to become husband and partnet of the lucrative business.  sort of like "position buying" no pun intended.   googling the womans name shows a very average looking obese female albeit with light skin color(important for thai men)
