WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House Intelligence Committee has issued subpoenas to the Justice Department and FBI for documents related to a dossier that alleged Russia collected compromising material on Donald Trump, the panel's top Democrat said on Tuesday.

Representative Adam Schiff told MSNBC in an interview that he and other Democrats on the committee objected to the subpoenas, which he said Republicans issued in an attempt to discredit its author, former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele.

Republicans have said it is important to understand the genesis of the dossier and whether it was created to sabotage Trump during his successful campaign for president.

The dossier was funded by a group that conducted political opposition research on Trump during the 2016 campaign and included wide-ranging allegations about Trump, his associates and his finances.

The House intelligence panel is conducting one of several congressional probes into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election, including potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

Russia denies meddling in the election and Trump denies any collusion.

The way things are going now , it looks like the Russian oversight/power on US politics is soon to be over.

There was no, and there is none, such Russian oversight. There was a Russian effort to mess with US politics and elections. What current ongoing investigations deal with are past events, and partially, curtailing (or attempting to curtail) similar instances in the future. Whether or not the Russian meddling effort was successful depends on alleged goals - in terms of actually applying direct control over US policy, probably not much. In terms of fomenting chaos and friction, or undermining US global standing - full marks.

Reality  or   not,  the " Russian " influence  has  had a  dramatic  effect  to date. Short  strings,  longs  strings,  rubber   bands even  have  provided   enough case  for  high level  probes  and pushes.

If   nothing  else it  does  seem to  have  encouraged  a  sway  to  the  rational  rather than a total  meglomaniacle  global  suicide.  Maybe !

Well put. I believe the last part was the primary goal. Which was achieved.

It will be interesting to see if they interfere in the upcoming German elections. If so, time to fight back.

Facebook just reported they sold thousands of ads to Russian troll farms during the elections.
