Tour boats caught dropping anchors on Phi Phi Island coral reef

PHUKET:-- The national park chief responsible for Phi Phi Island has ordered officials to investigate footage showing tour boats dropping their anchors onto a coral reef off Laem Thong Beach, on the northern east coast of the island.

 

“I have asked officials to investigate the boats shown in the video and track down those responsible. Thank you for sending us this evidence,” Worapot Lomlim, Chief of the Hat Noppharat Thara – Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, told The Phuket News today (Sept 11).

 

The seven-minute clip, supplied to The Phuket News, shows several speedboats dropping their anchors onto coral reef from within the water near the boats. Some parts of the clip shows groups of tourists snorkelling beside the boats, and shows sections of badly damaged coral.

Does this surprise anybody?

 

A good public appology and all will be set to cruise again!

They don't give a rats ass about the environment; it's just money now and to hell with anything else !

The  only way to stop this criminal behaviour,  is to confiscate the boat and destroy it.

What coral reefs?

This happend one time when I was taking a group of divers diving off Koh Tao, so I cut the anchor rope

The simple solution is to place mooring buoys at all dive and

snorkeling sites. The boats should never have to drop anchor.

It surprises me, I thought all the coral had been destroyed already.

They have periodically tried that.

 

Without constant (as in a dedicated team working every day) maintenance the ropes fray and the buoys drift off into the ocean, very few survive the monsoon.

 

We all know how efficient Thais are at maintenance, and how they see a maintenance budget as more useful when is used to keep the mia noi operating happily.

Obviously they didn't try hard enough.

 

properly constructed moorings using durable material last for a very long time (lol... rope is not a durable material)

 

Inspection and maintenance is still required, but this is paid for by demanding a mooring fee.... if they don't want to pay, they can't play

 

this fee then employs people to collect the fee, in the first instance, then (further) construct and maintain the asset.... so a whole business can be developed ( under the stewardship of a farang, for obvious reasons )

Clean out the oil and fuel and sink it. New habitat for lots of fish and sea life as well.

Confiscate ? yes but why destroy?,...they could be sold !!!
