PATTAYA -- Sophon Cable TV posted alarming aerial pictures of the extent of the trash build-up on the holiday island of Koh Lan.

Thousands of tons of rubbish is turning part of the once beautiful island into a massive tip as boats that should carry the trash to the mainland remain in dry dock being fixed.

Concerned representative of a Pattaya residents group Sinchai Wattanasatsathorn said that the problem was increasing by the day.

Some while ago it was reported there was 30,000 tons of trash - now there is much, much more.

Apart from the boats a budget was allocated by the Pattaya authorities to handle the problem. But those looking into an "incineration" solution are dragging their feet meaning that the trash is starting to take over the island.

Sinchai said that a permanent solution needs to be found fast.

One of the solutions being explored is to use some of the trash for fuel for industry.

The folks at Sophon TV are to be praised for being brave enough to post these photos (& other photos in the past) of the littering problems the tourist city of Pattaya faces. So many of the locals turn their heads to this community issue or are afraid to speak out with the fear of retaliation from city officials or the mafia. I have yet to see city government officials really care about the city's infrastructure or pollution problems.

Impose a 10 baht recycle fee on every drink container, and the main problem will disappear as the poor will collect every drink container and take them to the recycle plant.

Even Europe is finally getting their brain into gear on this.

Ha. Budget was allocated, where did that go i wonder. We all know though.

Ah. Put in in the envelope i will take it over. Sometime.

Not a week seems to pass without another story about another environmental disaster in this part of the world .. The Thai authorities need to wake up to the damage being done to the countries reputation as a holiday destination .. Folk who come here are video'ing the mess the place is in to then put it up on the Internet as frequently as when the latest calamity unfolds .. Rather than fanny around listening to fortune tellers and talking to frogs Chair' P wants to get down 'ere and excercise them 44 powers a bit rapido before Thailand ascends further up the table of sh*t-tips to top spot ..

Glass, plastic, paper + wire, metal ,cloth, household appliances and "proper" wood are already collected by the poor...the bins in my area are scavenged 2-5 times a day

Somehow (maybe a subsidy)

the government should encourage them to also collect plastic bags and other smaller plastic bits that have value but are harder to collect.

How long have these boats been in for "repairs" on Koh Lan..????...by the look of the photos around 4 years...!!!

Add it to Pattaya's "sewerage sea"....Koh Samui's 250,000 tonnes, 3 - storey high stinking smelly high trash pile, ...and others that we don't know about as it " might reflect poorly on the Kingdoms reputation and scare the tourists away"

This country and it's outlying (one beautiful unspoilt islands) and adjoining oceans...is fast becoming one big open rubbish dump.

60% of the trash in ocean comes from Thailand, Malaysia, and China...(61% by tomorrow possibly)

Meaning the budget got shared around & nothing got done.... sounds about right for local officials !!!

A nice bonus each & don't forget to keep the trash below tree top level, no-one will notice !!!

A smart Thai general will come up with killing two birds with one stone here . They will propose towing it all out to see so that Thailand - currently only languishing in 6th place in contaminating the sea - can be top polluter and number one in something.

555... I think they have a big enough problem without "buying" more rubbish.

....... and Yet, TAT is drumming up additional Tourists by the millions..... WHY not fix-up such problems, before inviting more GUESTS into your home???

However, it's a TIT for TAT issue ....(this is Thailand) versus TAT....

hopefully lots, of prospective overseas tourist will see these photos - so they know what to expect..... when they finally get here.

That will only work if they cost more than 10 baht to produce. If they cost less it won't take the mafia long to buy them by the truck load for sale to the govt.
