Up to 173 cases of alleged temple fund embezzlement to be submitted for legal action

THE CENTRE for National Anti-Corruption (CNAC) has concluded that 173 cases out of 498 complaints of alleged embezzlement of temple maintenance funds had grounds to proceed with criminal charges.

And some of the 173 cases involved temples that repeatedly applied for maintenance funds that were diverted to corrupted officials.

The Royal Thai Police Counter-Corruption Division is expected to wrap up investigation of the 173 cases this coming week.

Some 14 locations have been searched for evidence to support potential criminal charges. The division will submit their findings to the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) to proceed with legal action under the Criminal Code, said Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission secretary-general Prayong Preeyajit, in his capacity as CNAC secretary.

The CNAC would also co-ordinate with supervisors of accused officials from the National Office of Buddhism, to ensure disciplinary action is taken against the accused officials in parallel with criminal prosecution.

Saying that the CNAC actions focused on the officials involved in the wrongdoing, Prayong said there were no clear evidence to incriminate monks.

The probe has so far found that monks were ordered to open bank accounts used to receive the temple maintenance budget and then wire most of the money back to the personal accounts of corrupted officials.

Prayong said officers would have to probe further to prove that monks had an intention to participate in accounting dishonesty and wiring of funds to corrupt officials.

So the officials gave the money to the monks, and the monks kicked it back to the officials.

However, 'there is no evidence of the monks doing wrong.'

What utter nonsense. It is a kick-back, pure and simple. And that is a crime.

Up to 173 cases, nonsense more like 17300 cases, it is going on everywhere.

Money involved very few people are honest, certainly not monks, or government officials.

I cant really say that I am surprised. Corruption and the love of money is so prevalent in this society, that the ideals of the Buddha have been drowned out. It shows the depth of the problem Thailand faces in cleaning up it act, when the supposed paragons of virtue are bang at it too.

I love how religion, the all powerful, needs money to get a long.

I read an article about how a German couple travelled the world with zero money........and they were idiots.

So who will you put your money on in the great sweepstake for the title 'Most Corrupt Institution in Thailand'?

Will it be the Police - clear front runners most weeks?

Will the Army forge ahead as they protect an alleged killer?

The Monkhood is now making a late bid for this honour, but is it too little, too late?

I'm putting my money on the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

Mere chicken feed. The RTP and government  dwarf these little monks. The people are the ones loosing as they believe temple is real and the police they already know. But what can they do. A government with more boards and cabinets than USA and AU combined. All paid army washed ups. Raping the nation further to ensure the reform never really happens and the split is in new envelopes.

Prayut needs to consult with Bin Ladden on reform measures

41% of the Thai economy is "black".That nominally leaves 59% of the economy as non-black or as "white" as the driven slush. So logically only the "white" economy can be corrupted as the "black" economy does not officially exist.

Being generous one could guess that of the "white" economy about 70% is corrupt. On a national scale that adds up to one hell of a lot of corruption.

Many respected international economists say the situation is virtually unrepairable.

Corruption at all levels is so endemic Thailand is past redemption, the people needed to do the clean-up are the most corrupt of all....

Corruption in Thailand needs to be accepted by those not involved in it. For those who are involved it is part of everyday life and they seem to have no problem with it.
