CHAINAT: -- A beauty salon worker has been praised for giving struggling children a lift up after she opened a tutor college in her home in Chainat province.

Manee Bunwirat, 53, only finished M3 (Year 10 in the British system) herself and never went to university.

But she is getting great results from the children who call her "Kru Manee" and love her classes.

And she only charges 1 baht per person per session - to pay for the ice that goes in their drinks!

Sanook reporters were taken to Manee's home by the Hankha district chief Ek Sophitthanon who praised the tutor as a shining example for someone helping others in the community to get a better future.

Manee teaches primary grades P1 to P6 at her home and has at least 30 students attending the sessions she runs every day.

She said she found it difficult at first as she had no formal education in teaching but now 9 years down the line many of her students have moved to the top of the class at regular school.

Manee, a beauty shop worker, said she started by teaching her own children before moving on to relative's youngsters. As word spread she started taking others but she only charges them one baht a time.

District chief Ek said that his department helps out with school books and materials and there are plans to install better toilets in her house to help the dedicated tutor.

I was asked by a local committee to teach kids in my area English conversation informally (for free) in an open air meeting room, as I could explain some of the English words/phrases to them in Thai.

I said yes, as long as you provide a work permit. I then had to explain to them what would happen to me if I was caught without a work permit. None of the group had any idea of the hassle involved to stay on the right side of the law.

Needless to say, that was the end of their interest.
