WASHINGTON/BANGKOK (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha at the White House on Oct. 3, the White House said in a statement.

"The President and Prime Minister will discuss ways to strengthen and broaden bilateral relations and enhance cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region," the statement said.

Confirmation of the visit is the latest sign of warming ties between Bangkok and Washington. The relationship between the two had cooled after the Thai military took power in a 2014 coup.

It follows a visit to Thailand by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in August - the highest level visit by a U.S. official since the 2014 coup.

"The meeting of the two leaders reflects the importance of the strengthening of the alliance between Thailand and the U.S.," the Thai Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

"The two countries will discuss ways to forge ahead in becoming strategic partners for the benefit of both nations equally and sustainable,"

Prayuth and members of his cabinet will also be meeting with representatives of Thai businesses in the United States during the three day visit.

Thailand is often cited as the United States' oldest ally in Southeast Asia and the United States has been urging the region to do more to cut funding streams to North Korea.

Tensions have mounted on the Korean peninsula since North Korea conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on Sept. 3.

The United States has said it believes North Korean front companies are active in Thailand and it is trying to encourage the Thais to shut them down, but Thailand last month said trade between Thailand and North Korea had dropped by as much as 94 percent over the past year.

He better familiarized himself with all the trading aspect and agreements between Thailand and USA. USA is the 3rd largest trading partner and Thailand has a trade surplus. Trump in a foul mood with his angst with just about every thing especially his pet subject trade imbalances. Prayut may get the end of a curve ball and he better prepare well to defend.

I don't think Khun Prayuth Chan O Cha is too concerned about Trump, I'm sure he's had to deal with worse than him throughout his military service.

I agree. There must be a huge number of far dumber people than Trump in the military here. Especially high up.

Doubtful in a society based on nepotism.  You can see that when he gets challenged.  His first instinct is to get angry.  Trump is the same, but he is elected, so Khun Prayuth is not going to get much respect there.  He is lucky to be seen by any elected official.  The discussion is going to be about shutting down North Korean government businesses and trade.

Prayut goes to Washington October 2-4

By The Nation

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha long-planned visit with United States President Donald Trump has been set for October 2-4.

It will be the first state visit to the US by a sitting prime minister.

Trump phoned Prayut in April to discuss issues including the North Korea crisis and invited him to the White House on a date to be determined.

The visit had originally been mooted for July.

Prayut will lead a large Thai delegation to Washington for talks on security, the economy, trade and investment, as well as regional issues, deputy government spokesperson Lt Gen Werachon Sukondhapatipak said on Tuesday.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak and the ministers of foreign affairs, interior, commerce and defence would accompany Prayut, he said.

The meeting comes ahead of next year’s commemorations of the 200th anniversary of Thai-US relations.

The Trump administration has been keen to bolster bilateral ties in East and Southeast Asia amid rising tensions over North Korea’s development of nuclear and missile arsenals.

Talk about patting oneself on the back ... :cheesy:

Aaaaaanyway ... It's clear that the US of A will benefit immensely from this rapprochement, and there's no doubt that the Donald will pay attention when Thailand's Dear Leader tells him how to keep his cool when the media lash out at him, how to always keep the political debate above schoolyard level, how to respect the people who make up the country he governs, and above all how to make the difference between democracy and mockracy.

Let's hope it's a wrecking ball . . . and right on the jewels. How many faces would that light up?

Like Prayuth's ego. He may get to like the place . . . and stay on as the new Thai ambassador. He has the power to kick the old one out, after all. Fingers crossed.
