Thanks mate, get well and stay strong, take  turmeric and ginger in the morning, don't trust pharmas, only natural will do good! Trust me, all  the best!

Off topic, but important...

I have to strongly disagree with you - 'pharma' saved my life

I am currently back in Oz serving time while waiting for the pension.  I decided that they are only going to make it harder and harder for Expats to come back,  get the pension, and then leave again after 2 years.   They can already delay/deny portability if they think someone has only returned to get it and always planned to go back again. Would not be surprised to see them change it to 3 or 5 years soon.  Would also not be surprised to see them impose a 'time limit' for keeping the pension when living overseas - maybe 5 or 10 years only.

I decided to solve all that up front by 'qualifying' for portability before I am granted the pension.  The reality is that most people live 15-20 years (and some more) after getting the pension - and over that timeframe it is a lot of money to forgo.

The added benefits mean that the Thai Wife will get residency after 2 years, which means she can come and go for any period at any time. And after 4 years she can apply for citizenship, which brings even more benefits.  And if she lives in Australia for a net total of 10 years (we plan to spend time in both), she can take the part-pension back to Thailand.

I cant remember exactly the numbers, but I figured if I live to 85 (both parents here and past that) then in that timeframe I would get about 8-9 million baht NPV from pension payments.  That is a lot of money - and IMO worth the trouble.

In essence my advice, if you cant make it happen and I understand this is not OK for some, is that it is a lot easier to convince them you are staying in Oz if you arrive back before the pension is due.

PS - everyone who has been saying they wouldnt live here because they wouldnt like it - are dead right.  After living in Thailand for almost 5 years all up, I have found life here to be 'not nice'.  It is like an old wound that was healed and has been re-opened.  I knew it was not going to be easy in Oz, but I didnt realise how much I had grown used to the easy and happy life of Thailand.  It is not one thing, and there are some things better (driving a car), but there are a lot of little things here, and some big ones, that are just f'in awful.  Why is everyone here so damn unhappy - because there are very few reasons to be happy.

Sorry about that - venting a little too much - this is Princess Elvis sucking it up and getting on with it.:wai:

Current criteria...

  • 10 year residence requirements. This requirement has to be met by any person who wants to receive an age pension. The 10 year qualifying residence requirement states that you have to be living in Australia continuously for a period of 10 years. If you have lived in Australia on and off, then the total of all such periods of residence must be equal to or more than 10 years. Within these smaller periods, there should be at least one period where you have lived in Australia continuously for five years.
