An easy way to turn a few thousand baht into a hundred thousand!

An easy way to turn a few thousand baht into a hundred thousand!

Sanook reported on what they said was a "new con" defrauding the Thai public.

This enabled fraudulent online traders who could turn an investment of a few thousand baht into a lot more by randomly selecting victims.

They cited the case of a Thai woman on Facebook who spoke of her plight - "Yutha Krainarong". But they said she was just one of many to have been ripped off.

Yutha was conned by someone sending things from China.

They said that companies would send parcels to people randomly with private postal companies.

The parcels would arrive at private addresses and the names and phone numbers would match with residents.

They would have to pay cash on delivery and could not open the packages.

People have been charged anywhere between 900 baht to 2,000 baht, said Sanook.

But inside after they had paid they found only worthless goods or even

just plain paper.

Sanook said it was a numbers game. A certain proportion of the public would accept the parcels even though they may not have ordered anything.

Taking into account the cost of the packaging and sending the parcels to the victims only a certain number need to accept to give the crooks a handsome profit.

Sanook said it was easy to turn 20,000 baht into 100,000 in this way by preying on the gullible.

The whole idea of COD is so you can open and check (correct product, not damaged etc) before paying. If you are going to accept a package you didn't order, wouldn't you at least open it before paying ?

Is it?  I thought the whole idea was so that you could pay cash on delivery.

That's is OK...Lazada now has a very good, free, and simples method for returns and tracking. The delivery guy or company cannot take it back. Anyway, I will not buy very large or very expensive items in any online shop.

Something similar was used in my country in the '70's and '80's.
A company, with origin at the Netherlands, selling books was behind that setup.
The company was publishing in newspapers and weekly magazines offers in which you could buy (eg) 6 weekly magazines at an introductory price of 59 Baht.
Normal price of these magazines were 125 Baht each.

In very small print (you would need almost a Microscope to read it) was written that if you buy the first set, you agree to let the company send you every week a new magazine at 125 baht each.

Most people SIGNED the contract and purchased the 1st pack of (old) magazines, but did not cancelled the next purchase.
A subsequent magazine was sent every week, but the receiver did not pay as the tough they did not order it and thus did not need to pay anything.
Some people were very smart and send an assigned letter to stop the mailings.
But they still needed to pay the received magazines.
Others did not send anything.
After a few months of "no pay" the receiver got an incasso letter from a real Forecloser to pay for the magazines + 10,000 Baht extra costs (Forecloser and Court).
That company made lots of money until a law was passed in the '80's that an automatic contract renewal must be clearly written and signed to be legal.

Its a scam whichever way you look at it. I once knew a gym owner who started selling items with a guarantee of your money back, if you were not satisfied, so not to break the law. The items were for 10 pound or so. They were worth 2 or 3 and many people asked for their money back. So trading standards didn't get on his back, he would send them a cheque. The Cheque had a picture stamped across it of a big vibrator. The gym owner told me that many people just wouldn't cash the cheque which had a time frame to do, just because of the embarrassment. So to him he was 'quids in'.Another con yes of course. Was he a decent chap not really. This was in the 1980 when people used cheques more then. Thought I would share the story.

I remember a similar story where the cheque was in the name of something like "Sexual Aids Company Ltd" which had the same effect.

Perhaps Thai exporters might consider developing this new distribution-system for exports to China ? :whistling:
