MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) - Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday Britain needed to take a tougher line against those people who post and view extremist content on the internet following a number of attacks this year.

"There are a number of things we need to do to deal with this," she told Sky News. "(One) is taking more action and tougher action on those people who do use the internet, who are putting terrorist material, extremist material on the internet.

"In the future we'll be making it an offence to stream or browse that material and we're going to be increasing the sentence so that it could last to a sentence of up to 15 years."

typical knee jerk reaction.  How many times do you end up browsing something online that you never intended to browse?  Quite often one page leads to another without you even knowing you are going there.

Get real. I think it unlikely that Granny will be in court for looking at a Jihadi website by accident that popped up because she was searching for knitting patterns.

It was an attempt at sarcasm.

On a forum designed to discuss similarities and disagreements  argument by statement doesn't really work.

Too easy to put stuff on social media, but equally as easy to come across unwanted content.

Something has to be done as it is out of control.

The Luddites of the left only want to bankrupt the country again with populist policy that can't be paid for.

I think you have the right ID for that comment: Jobsworth.

It's a good move. Tougher sentences are required. Let's hope Boris approves of it once she has passed it by him.

From what I understand, increasing the penalty will have little or no effect.  It's just the easy thing for a politician to do in order to look "tough on crime."  If a criminal has already chosen to risk getting caught on a felony, the degree of the risk likely plays a small role, if any at all.  If fact, perhaps many think they will not get caught anyway, so what's the difference?

The greater deterrent is significantly increasing the possibility of getting caught.  That has a greater affect on deciding on whether to take the risk or not.  On the other hand, since we are talking about the Internet, I wonder if such measures would raise some important privacy issues.
