BANGKOK (Reuters) - A Thai criminal court has issued a second arrest warrant for former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who fled the country weeks ago before she was sentenced to jail in absentia, police said on Thursday.

The warrant, issued on Wednesday, was for violating the immigration law, deputy police chief Srivara Ransibrahmanakul told reporters.

Yingluck fled abroad in August fearing that the military government, set up after a coup in 2014, would seek a harsh sentence. It remains unclear how she left the country.

Last week, the Supreme Court convicted and sentenced Yingluck in absentia to five years in jail for mismanaging a rice subsidy scheme that cost the country billions of dollars.

Throughout her trial, Yingluck said she was innocent and not responsible for the day-to-day running of the scheme, arguing that she was a victim of political persecution.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, the army chief who led the 2014 coup against Yingluck's government, recently said Thailand would pursue her through diplomatic channels and police cooperation, using Interpol.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Busadee Santipitaks told reporters on Thursday the ministry was working on revoking Yingluck's Thai passport.

She added that the ministry had no information on whether Yingluck was seeking political asylum.

Last week, Thai police raided Yingluck's home in eastern Bangkok, armed with a search warrant.

The military government said last week she was in Dubai. But a source in the United Arab Emirates said Yingluck left Dubai for London on Sept. 11, without giving details.

she's here she's there she's everywhere the scarlet Yingluck-rnel

There is tremendous power in silence.  Would never have  thought of Yingluck as stealthy.

Also many governments really have more important things to contend than Yingluck's whereabouts.

There certainly is tremendous power in silence, and yes are we not constantly told that she is nothing more than an empty-headed shopaholic?

But it does occur to me that all the reports on her whereabouts seem to be through the prism of the junta, as it were. There is no independent confirmation of her location, even the Dubai authorities are as quoted by the junta. The furor over cars, video pictures, DNA and police complicity could well be smoke and mirrors. And the lack of comment from Thaksin himself? Certainly out of character isn't it?

I will be blunt - I do wonder if she is in Thailand, held by the junta, effectively as a hostage. There is no evidence for this, but there again there is no evidence for her actually being anywhere else either.

The Shinawatra family would speak out if she was in a deep hole somewhere.  My guess they receive reports as to how she is and where.  It could be an elaborate hoax, which would benefit the junta and her.  Parts of the drama have touches of government buffoonery to make it seem like she actually pulled off an escape.   The speed in which the junta is moving may make one think otherwise.   Asking her to come out of hiding, may be part of some sort of pre arranged deal for allowing her to escape.   The  junta calls.  She responds with being scene coming out of Harrods with shopping bags.  Hard to say what is actually happening.

And how many more arrest warrants to go???? :cheesy::cheesy:

I could be wrong but I suspect the UK will not honor these warrants.
If mismanagement of government were a prison worthy offense in the UK would not Dartmoor be filled to capacity with former Members?

I agree that the silence of the Shinawatra family is the strangest part of all of it. That may be explained by them having been told that her survival depends on their silence? I don't know. I am not suggesting that the scenario which I have outlined is certain, or even probable. It is possible. Six weeks is a long time for someone as high profile as Yingluck to simply disappear, especially given her previous use of social media to communicate.

I think it is almost certain that the junta know where she is. I think it is possible that she is still in Thailand. There is as I said no real evidence either way.

I am keeping an open mind.

The announced conviction was for mismanagement. Now certain parties are trying to say it was for graft. Two entirely different matters in res juris, hinging in part on the intent.

.
I have not seen a legible copy of the decree, but what has been reported here is quite chaotic. The UK is very unlikely to arrest somebody on the basis of conflicting reports.
Could it be deliberate in order to make sure she stays away? I have seen many suggestions that the powers prefer she stay at arm's distance, though they would like to have control of her reputed assets... the financial ones.

And the YL soap continues... :cheesy:

These clowns can keep issuing arrest warrants until they have enough to wallpaper a toilet and it will not make a bit of difference. The lovely lady is long gone and she is smart enough and rich enough to enjoy a long life far away from this messed up country. Furthermore, do you really think the P.T.B. want her to return and be a major thorn in their side?? Out of sight, well almost out of mind is the only road for these earslings left to them.

An animal with mad cow disease and no passport that's already been eaten and turned into poo - authorities can drill right down to the very farm from whence it came. Yet a woman with a passport can't be found? Hmmmmm ...

My guess is that they let her go or made it extremely easy to flee, but am not certain in the least.

so nice to see so many photos of the ex-PM is so many threads

I thought the Junta was supposed to be getting over her

Yes, since I made that post her legal team have made an announcement (albeit anonymously) that she is currently in the UK on a tourist visa, and preparing to apply for asylum.

So the possibility I was discussing has been removed. Good. No need for medications then.....

He has led, fed and directed the political persecution from day one with his mate Suthep and don't we all know it

We don't have numbers that large.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that the song and dance is because a woman was given authority over the green beans, and they just can't handle that, the loss of face for the G-boys must feel formidably awful...

Not lovely, take off her makeup and you'll find a witch underneath. Rich because she stole from the country.  Thailand is only messed up because of people like her.
