U.S. diplomacy with North Korea to continue until 'first bomb drops' - Tillerson

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Sunday that President Donald Trump had instructed him to continue diplomatic efforts to calm rising tensions with North Korea, saying "those diplomatic efforts will continue until the first bomb drops."

Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," Tillerson downplayed messages that President Trump had previously posted on Twitter suggesting Tillerson was wasting his time trying to negotiate with "Little Rocket Man," a derogatory nickname Trump has coined for North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump "has made it clear to me to continue my diplomatic efforts," Tillerson said.

Tillerson's comments Sunday come amid soaring tensions between the United States and North Korea following a series of weapons tests by Pyongyang and a war of words between the two countries' leaders.

North Korea has conducted a series of nuclear tests in recent weeks and ago and launched two missiles over Japan.

Tillerson has been in talks with China to enlist its help on getting North Korea to back down.

But Trump's recent Twitter messages appeared to undercut Tillerson's efforts, prompting the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker to complain that Trump was publicly castrating Tillerson and hurting diplomatic talks.

Tillerson downplayed those tweets Sunday, telling CNN that Trump and China's President Xi Jinping have an extremely close relationship and that China understands the U.S. position.

"Rest assured that the Chinese are not confused in any way" about the American policy towards North Korea, he added.

Doubt he'll do that.  He knows it's instant destruction for him.  Kim may be a cold hearted killer, but he's not stupid.  Trump may be a...(too many negative terms to list)....but he's not stupid either.

Doesn't seem the normal diplomatic language but hope it works out. Dim Kim just needs to cool down the rhetoric and threats.

Another reason to stop this rogue regime.  Nuclear weapons is but one reason.  Though the most important.

When North Korean hackers tried to steal $1 billion from the New York Federal Reserve last year, only a spelling error stopped them.

Then only sheer luck enabled a 22-year-old British hacker to defuse the biggest North Korean cyberattack to date, a ransomware attack last May that failed to generate much cash but brought down hundreds of thousands of computers across dozens of countries — and briefly crippled Britain’s National Health Service.

Their track record is mixed, but North Korea’s army of more than 6,000 hackers is undeniably persistent, and undeniably improving, according to American and British security officials who have traced these attacks and others back to the North.

Ummm....a bit of a difference between trying to figure out what nutty Kim is up to from a criminal point of view and hacking a bank for 1 billion dollars.  Sad you don't understand the difference.

Hmmm...let's see.  North Korea is hacking countries and business all around the world.  It's illegal and they do it to make money.  But you seem OK with it.  Ok...

The US is trying to map out their military networks for protection in case NK decides to attack somewhere in the world.  But you are against that.  The US isn't doing this to make money.  Just for "self-preservation".

Absolutely bizarre you defend this guy so strongly.

The US comes in at number two after China.

NK is welcome to try and hack US military computers.  Leave everything else alone.  The US isn't hacking a bank and stealing money.  NK is.

I shouldn't expect more coming from a guy who use to have Mugabe's picture as an avatar. You seem to gravitate towards brutal dictators. LOL

Whose bombs - North Korea or US?

Or will it be another "moron" bomb that Trump leaps over diplomatic efforts and orders a first strike?

Both need to cool down the rhetoric.  Trump's new to this game.  Kim's been making threats like this for years.

Perhaps you need to read that article a bit closer.  China's hacks are state sponsored and go primarily after the US government.  Those in the US are done by individuals, and are not state sponsored.  Hope you understand the difference.  We'll see...

North Korea's attacks are all state sponsored.  So yes, outrage at their governments for allowing this to happen is appropriate.

Excellent article.  I'll bookmark it!  Even though this is totally off topic. LOL

Please show me where the US has hacked into a banking system to steal 1 billion dollars.  Or hacked into a movie studio.  Or....just one link will do.

Otherwise, it's not double standards.  It's you not being able to see the difference.  Military hacks are one thing, and both countries are doing that.  Hacking commercial enterprises of other countries for financial gain is an entirely another matter. Your love for Kim is blinding you to reality.
