chama
The Thai police are the one problem with visiting Thailand that cannot be overlooked. There are some honest hardworking police officers but there are far too many that are corrupt and looking to take advantage of people, both Thai and foreigners, although foreigners are the bigger target. Visitors are often better off dealing with the non uniformed criminals than those in uniform.

In truth, ALL tourists can be vulnerable to Thai criminals, such as the jet ski scammers, the m'bike rental scammers, the jewel scammers, the "dropping a cigarette" scammers ( and the soon to be "smoking on the beach" scammers ) and the list goes on and on. Yet only zero tour Chinese are apparently of concern. Outside a certain shopping mall in Chiang Mai a scam happens every day with the red songtheaws that demand an extortionate amount for a ride, simply because there is no alternative public transport. 100 minimum per person for a trip back to town ( and not moving till a full load of unfortunates ), while Grab charges 80 baht for the trip, for everyone in the car total. No wonder they hate Grab and Uber. BTW, in Pattaya baht buses on the Nth Rd run will wait till they have a full load, but they only charge 10 baht each. asiaexpat
Pot calling the kettle black. Take a tour in China, or even go it alone, and you will encounter numerous scams and cheats. Besides, most of the zero cost tour operators are Chinese. 1
phetpeter
These types of tours go on everywhere, The parents when on a coach tour of Ireland, with the intention of skipping two days of the tour,to visit my fathers family in county Clare where the tour was to spend two nights at a hotel on the Galway bay, The first day to the cliffs and the second day a few places round the area. The first sign of a problem was in Limerick when the coach stopped at a gift shop come restaurant, and my mother decided that the shop opposite looked more appealing, The tour guide physically grabbed them in the middle of the road and tried to drag them back to their shop. The following day when they said they would be on the coach and would join them they following day at their next location, nearly had them calling the police. I drove coach tours for many years and some tour operators told us to only go to certain locations even if it meant the passengers having to stay on the coach longer and the tour stops refreshments etc., where later than usual. We herded them around, got them up at seriously early times, departed at 6 am etc. and when in Pattaya I see the Chinese marched down walking street, with their flag bearer. Only to see the escapees a couple of hours later coming back!

Popular Post spidermike007
Well, there are two components to this. First is, that the tours they are referring to are super cheap package tours, and tend to attract the low end of the Chinese tourist market. They are expecting to get alot, for next to nothing. Of course these tours are going to take them to the gem markets, and other places, where they are paid a high commission. The Chinese do the same thing with the Thais, with their own tours in China. My wife went on one of them, and she was constantly being herded into markets that were grossly overpriced. The second component here is the utter and complete inability for most Thai people to ever own a problem. They dance around a problem, and rarely ever take responsibility for it, being pathologically fearful of losing face. Face is no doubt, the greatest form of weakness, a human can engage in. Many will say it is societal, cultural, etc. No matter. It is the absolute and complete lack of the ability to introspect, and look within for the source of any problem, shortcoming, conflict, or issue. It is the polar opposite of spirituality, and therefore an absolute scourge on Buddha, and all of the precepts he taught. By practicing face, you are denying your spiritual heritage. You are refusing to man up. To take responsibility for your actions. If a man or a woman cannot, and will not take responsibility for their actions, the problems they create, the mistakes they make, and the issues they involve themselves in, what are they? Are they still an adult? Are they a complete individual, if they allow themselves to be limited by such infinitely small social convention? Who cares what people think of you? For those of us with high self esteem, it just does not matter. Sure, close friends and family. But strangers on the street? Who gives a rat's butt about this? It means nothing what they think, nor what they say about you. They count for nothing. They are just people, and people you do not know, nor will ever see again. Face is rife with self doubt, and by subscribing to this weakness, and man or woman is made a far lesser person. For those of us with high self esteem, we know who we are. What others think, what society thinks, what a guy or gal thinks, means less than zero. Real men or women, simply own a situation, and take responsibility for their errors or mistakes. Small men, social deviants, or emotional adolescents deflect, obfuscate, attempt to confuse, and do everything in their power to deny that they made a mistake, or that they are responsible in any way, or on any level. They make up narratives about fake news, or alternative facts. Anything to avoid looking within, for the source of the problem. Anything.

Is it illegal to lease hotels, buy and operate buses, and invest in restaurants ? The only illegal activities will be evading taxes or corrosion. Without proving that, not much you can do but beat them at their own game. If you want Chinese customers, go to China. Waiting passively for them to come and spend money is not going to work. The Thai tourist authority is opening new offices in China (BP last weekend). They want to attract higher end tourists who spend more per capita, but also targetting those Chinese cities where most of the population has never been abroad before. Now, only 4% of China's population currently have a passport, as that %age rises there will be more and more visitors for years to come from both ends of the economic spectrum.
