Thai rice price up 15% this year on high demand

Thai rice price up 15% this year on high demand

BANGKOK, 17 October 2017 (NNT) – The Thai Rice Exporters Association has indicated a 15 percent increase in the average price of Thai rice this year due mainly to high demand among importers.

Pol Lt Charoen Laothamatas, President of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, reported that the Kingdom has exported more than 8.2 million tons of rice since the beginning of this year.

Given the export volume during the last three months is projected to be around 900,000 tons monthly, the president said the association has set the yearly export target at 10.8 million tons, which is close to the Commerce Ministry’s figure of 11 million.

Mr Charoen added that most mill houses currently do not have any grains left in stock, resulting in a surge in demand overseas as well as the price of Thai rice. Compared to last year, the price has gone up by 15 percent; however, it is still on par with the rates of competitors.

Although some rice plantations in Thailand have been damaged by recent floods, the high precipitation this year is expected to help boost the country’s rice output by about 10 percent.

Didn't the military just flog off all stored rice at bargain prices for to those with the largest auction commission envelopes.

No they didn't. If you had read the other newspaper the government said that they would not sell any more of the old stock this year.

Bangladesh wants to buy 150,000 tons of rice and Sri Lanka wants to buy 25,000 tons.

Good news for Thailand but obviously not for you.

Hope they sell lots of rice at great prices Farmers deserve a break

What other newspaper would that be? Link please. In any case I quote from this story.

"Mr Charoen added that most mill houses currently do not have any grains left in stock".

Despite what you might suggest there surely can't be much left anywhere after the military decided to become rice wheelers and dealers and flogged it off to the cheapest bidders paying the highest commissions.

What military types know about rice is little more than it is pleasant to eat when hungry after a night at the officer's mess.

When someone refers to the 'other newspaper' it doesn't take much nouce to work out that it is the Bangkok Post, which doesn't allow links on TV as you should know.

The current government had to sell off the stored rice cheaply as (1) most of it had detiorated & (2) it cost up to twice as much as the current local price.

No it wasn't the 'cheapest bidders' either but the highest bidders for the cheap rice.

No surprise that you try to twist reports to support your agenda though.

Thank you but I prefer my news source as Thaivisa News which says:

"...most mill houses currently do not have any grains left in stock".

If you choose to take your information from other misinformed news sources that's up to you.

It appears your agenda and my agenda are not as one. So be it!

One minute there are millions of tons of the stuff sat in sheds the next there is none what is the truth, if anyone knows what the truth is.

Or was it while the court case was on we had big stockpiles, now its over those piles did not exist.

The later I expect.

Fragrance rice grade sold at animal feed prices. Some powerful mystic knowledge of predicting future prices or just plain corruption.

The other paper is the BKK post and we are not allowed to post links or quotes to it. If you had any idea at all you would realise that.

I suggested that YOU look what the other paper said about rice stocks.

How do you know what military types think about rice?

Your comments seem, as usual. to be made up on the spot with no links or references at all.

If only world-prices were much-higher than they are  ("however, it is still on par with the rates of competitors") , then the government would not have lost so much unwinding PTP's wonderful rice-scheme, and if only rice didn't deteriorate in-storage over a few years, especially in poor-quality warehousing where rats & birds can get at it, then it could be held-in-storage forever !

If only my Aunt Mabel were a man, she'd be my Uncle, with a funny name !

The good news for Thai farmers is, now there's no-longer an over-hanging cliff of millions-of-tons of unsold old-rice, local-prices & export-prices can finally rise to give them a better return on their next crop.

That's if the millers & exporters don't cream-off much of the extra-profit.
