Swift action saves homes from more flooding

Yeah, as of this morning, nothing changed, larger range here but that's all.

There is still a lot of water to be drained, so i think that is what they are doing. Thankfully there is no extra rain to add to the problems. I think this time we were lucky that they started releasing water quite early because in the other article it mentioned the rainfall was as bad as in 2011. (might have been spread different) but it shows that releasing water before its too late is far better as keeping it all there to safe the rice and then releasing it in a period when there are high tides.

for the first time in quite a while I can see the top rung of my klong bandai

 

and the concrete area on two sides of the house is dry for the first time

in a couple of weeks

The evening level, nothing exciting, but I'll keep posting these until we have a definite (not government defined) end to the flooding risk.

 

 

We also got another batch of flood-relief. This time from the temple who are themselves flooded.

pretty much the same here,

although it seems to me (from your pics) that you experience more "goin down" than I do,

my top rung on the bandai is under water again

 

hopefully the improvement will be significant by the end of the week

(need to get to Pattaya for a couple of days to do some shopping,

 can't leave house/cats/water/boat and the lot to factotum to sort out alone)

We do seem to be seeing a general, but small, downwards trend.

 

If it wasn't for Wifey I would know nothing about the flood relief, seems to operate on the (extremely active) village grape-vine. First I knew about the initial lot was when she and about 20 others disappeared in the back of the village shop pickup to return an hour or so later with a package of foodstuffs. These we distributed to other flood victims (neither of us like canned fish and the rice wasn't the best quality). Apparently this works on address, got the right address, get the package, same with the free sandbags.

 

Even I would have gotten last nights stuff, they rang the doorbell and handed over 2 bags of rice.

 

There will also (apparently) be compensation although last time it needed photos of your flooded house to get, it's not like we need 10-20k Baht, others more deserving can have that.

Its going well Crossy, seems water management has averted huge flooding, I guess they are slowly draining it all.

going down here aswell, but not so much and quick as at your place, rather slowly I'd say

More than 400 families at the distribution point. Had to wait for the local "Boss" for his photo op.

Chatting with Wifey last night is appears that the Big Boss (I'm assuming the governor of Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi) stated that the river level would continue to be lowered to remove the "biggest flooding" before more water (I'm assuming he means a greater volume) is drained from the north. So the poor souls in the monkey-cheek west of Ayutthaya have more pain to endure

 

Of course, this would need a modicum of cooperation between the authorities, which, as we all know, happens regularly in Thailand, not.

 

We shall see what actually transpires.

It does show that, despite being on the same river and relatively close there are significant hydrological differences at each point. Makes life complex for the guys trying to control the situation.

Yes, i found that real strange too.. you 2 are not that far apart but it is a huge difference. I am not aware of any dams between Auytaya and where you are Crossy (probably are otherwise I don't see how there can be such a difference).  If anyone needs a pair of waders (to loan) i got a pair of fishing waders that i bought after 2011 because i know how hard it is to go through the water and clean yourself up all the time. A  pair of chest-high waders solves a lot of problems.

Yes, I have noticed quite a few anomalities with the water levels around here and Koh Kred and Pak Kred that I don't understand.

Don't really think that is much of challenge for the water management. I would expect that if you ask

some of them you will get a fairly straight and understandable answer as why it is the way it is.

We consider it strange but they are well used to it.

 

I think there are other reasons why water management is challenging in Thailand. Think of why

water is retained in those big dams, the purpose for retaining/storing water and the purposes the water serve;

 

recreational purposes

supporting natural fish and water creature life/breeding, both in dam and down stream

the odd production of hydro electricity

public utility water resources and drinking water for tambons/amphoes around

supporting fish farms, shrimp farms, shell farms etc

avoid flooding down stream

supporting rice farming

supporting vegetable farming

supporting fruit farming

 

this is challenging,

to cater for a host of different needs through managing water in 1 dam,

optimal water management for any one of these purposes will be different from optimal

management re other purposes

 

which purpose should win? which should lose?

 

and to top off the difficulties, the best basis for optimal management is to predict weather and

consumption close to a year in advance

 

(in my student days I side kicked in a electric utility company with whole sale buy/sale el-power

and managing output from two power stations with dams aswell as some water we owned in

other companie's dams.

 

had only two concerns to cater for

a) making a reasonable profit on the water

upholding a certain water level downstream in certain time periods for the benefit of fish

     and fishing

My home had 20 cm water back then, but the streets was a different story that was when waders would have come in handy and why i offered.

Not much happening here, not really going down, although the general trend is down.

 

My top rung is still wet now and then and the concrete "lawn" around the house still wet today.

Yeah, well down on the peak and the restaurant parking is now dry, big cleanup in progress to re-open. The rest of the village is still flooded and there was another distribution of flood relief yesterday.

 

But I agree, it's not actually moving much, I don't see being normal before December.
