I just came back from Savannakhet. Regarding the non O visa, with Thai child, everything went smoothly, so I won't expand on this subject.

Considering the very short week, with only 3 working days, I was expecting to be almost alone at the Consulate...I was wrong!

More people than usual, including many Filipinos for whom Savannakhet seems to have become the place of choice, and also including the usual bunch of uneducated farangs, who show up at a Consulate, during a mourning week, wearing tank tops, shorts and beach slippers!

Usually I stay at the Avalon Residence, for convenience and good quality for the price.

Yet, this time it was full! Go figure...so I went to the Aura Residence which recently opened right next door.

It is a bit more expensive, 800 baht against 680 baht at the Avalon, but worth the difference.

Everything is new and works, including the TV which is terrible at the Avalon...and the restaurant is very good, and delivers in the room for those who ask.

As a matter of fact, the Avalon restaurant was empty during the 2 days while the Aura's was full.

Otherwise, it seems that Savannakhet is slowly opening to the consumer society...a night bazar with many food stalls, and even a minimart have opened close to the Avalon-Aura area...

Was this a single entry, or multiple entry non-immigrant O visa?

What paperwork did you hand in? (or were asked for)

Was any family required to come with you, or you went by yourself?

What day did you drop off passport? What day did they have it ready?

In the visa sub-forums, elaborating on such details can be of great benefit to others [emoji41]

For non O with Thai child, Savannakhet only delivers single entry visas.

The paperwork required is described in details, for each kind of visa, on the Consulate website.

The visa submission form is also available online, which saves a lot of time since one can show up at the Consulate fully prepared.

Most important is the original birth certificate of the child, in my case.

Family members don't have to be present, only the documentation matters.

In Savannakhet, you drop your passport between 9am and 11 am, and get it back the next working day between 2pm and 4pm.

One last thing, when crossing the border on the way to Laos, you may want to ask the Thai immigration for a TM card.

Thus you won't have to get it on the way back, then look for a pen and a place to write with dozens of other people...instead you will be able to show up directly at the immigration window and escape a long waiting queue.

I think they used to have an English page, but I can only find the page in Thai now (http://www.thaisavannakhet.com/savannakhet/th/consulate-service/inspect/). The Google Translate translation of the page is pretty good

That is why a good visa trip report includes the paperwork the OP uses to obtain visa. What is on the consulate website vs what is accepted can often be different.

Oh well.

There isnt much in it apart from the Aura is obvisously newer.

From what i can make out they are owned by the same people.

I stayed one night at each this week. When asking about food at Avalon they told me to go next door.

Both rooms are the same floor plan. Intersting that the op mentioned everything works in th Aura as my hot water heater didnt but everything did at Avalon.

Aura has a kettle which is a tick for them but apart from that not much in it.  Cant comment on the tv as didnt watch it. I bought my android box and watched that. Internet was good in both places so didnt have a problem with watching anything.

Much better beer selection at Avalon.

Multi entry was simple. Marriage cetification, gf id, gf tabien ban(signed and dated) and your visa and passport copies (5000 bt).

You are right, but Google translate automatically offers the English translation.

It is not perfect, but easily understandable.

Avalon and Aura are certainly not owned by the same persons.

In fact, when I asked Avalon where I could stay since they were fully booked, they carefully avoided to mention Aura.

Same for the restaurant...Avalon restaurant was closed on Monday evening and their staff advised me to cross the road and go to some kind of beer bar, without even mentioning Aura restaurant just meters away.

Having said that, I do not intend to take position in favor of one or the other...both are OK, in this price range.

I actually built my submission from the information provided on the website, which is accurate.

I can think of one thing to which I can add...they ask for a copy of the passport.

Yet, "copy of the passport" has different meanings depending on who is asking.

In the case of this Consulate, it means the main page, with the holder's photo, as well as the page showing the Lao visa and entry stamp.

All the other pages, which I had copied just in case, were given back to me.

does one's name have to be on the Tabien Bahn or is it sufficient to have one's wife's name if one has a marriage certificate?

You name could not be in a tambien ban unless it was a yellow one.  Only copies of the one that your wife is registered in is needed.

Will Savannakhet issue multi-entry non-O?

OP says only single entry, but Mooner mentions a multi entry.

Multi-entry for non O based on marriage, single entry for non O based on Thai child.

In case you are interested, Aura has cheaper rooms on Agoda than Booking, around 500 thb only, and no credit card is required.

You can also book Joli guesthouse for 60 thb only !

Thanks...500 baht instead of 800 baht...that's a huge difference!
