Japanese employer gives non-smokers 6 days extra holiday

AS THE Japanese government pushes stricter tobacco regulations, many private companies are also pushing their employees to kick the habit.

 

One of them is Piala Inc – a Tokyo-based online marketing company which has made headlines for its decision in September to grant an extra six days’ paid leave to employees that do not smoke.

 

“One of our non-smoking staff put a message in the company suggestion box earlier in the year saying that smoking breaks were causing problems,” a spokesman for the company told The Telegraph. “Our CEO saw the comment and agreed, so we are giving non-smokers some extra time off to compensate.”

Years ago, I almost took up smoking just to get 3 or 4 extra breaks a day that the smokers seemed to be entitled to when they banned smoking inside the building and set up sheltered smoking areas with nice picnic tables, a fridge, microwave and water cooler. 

 

6 extra days off probably comes close to making it even.  That's 48 hours spread over around 250 working days a year, or around 12 minutes for each working day. 

 

Nope.  A lot of our smokers spent 3-4 times that puffing away...
