Thailand Travel Shield, definition of residence?

Recommended Posts

Folks,

TTS looks like a good option for older people on tourists visas. In their FAQ it is mentioned however:

Quote

Foreigner with permanent residency in Thailand is not eligible to purchase this insurance and the coverage will be voidable.

I could not find anywhere what defines "permanent residency". I.e. if a person spends in Thailand more than 182 days over 12 mo (still on tourist visa), is he/she considered a resident by their definition?

Trying to get travel insurance for my folks living here 6+ months / year on a tourist visa, and I stumbled upon various definitions of "resident", and day-count options makes them ineligible for most (if not all) travel insurances.

Cheers.

"Permanent residency" is something akin to one of J K Rowling's magical beasts.

Hardly anyone has it, it can take years or even decades to acquire, even if you finally get it it isn't really permanent at all as it can be rescinded, and as far as I can see it doesn't seem to give you anything worth having anyway.

So to sum up, a few people have "permanent residency" but everyone else is just passing through. That includes everyone on a retirement extension, a marriage extension, those with a work permit, and all those who have paid for a Thai Elite visa.

Agree. Specially in the context of a "Thailand" travel shield the term "permanent resident" is a well defined status (incl. special "passport"-like documents) and nothing to do with length of stay.

Legally most foreigners (incl. me) are temporary ("extension of temporary stay") even after staying for years.

Have you searched for long stay travel insurance as there used to be a number of providers offering up to 18 months? I know as I used to have in the past but not cheap.

Apologies if you have already looked -

Worldnomads is well known -  https://pp.worldnomads.com/

WorldwideInsure another - https://www.worldwideinsure.com/longstay-travel-insurance.htm

Also looking at the conditions of the Travel Shield insurance you can only have a maximum of 60 days at any one time which means you will need additional cover if they travel to surrounding countries.

Thanks for links,

I ended up getting them Pacific Cross inbound travel insurance: no age limit and can be purchased up to 1 week after arrival.

http://www.pacificcrosshealth.com/pchi-files/Travel_Inbound_A4.pdf?x95662

It's as cheap as Travel Shield and offers better coverage, but we'd have to pay 5k thb for each claim. I think it's a decent deal considering circumstances.

Now, onto Thai Travel Shield: on their sign up page they offer up to 90 days coverage now, which makes TTS a perfect choice if you live here from visa run to visa run. I could not find any annual limits, so I assume as long as you get TTS before arrival, it should work.

Correction! I just discovered something interesting about TTS: when you click Get Insurance on their main website, you're redirected at random to one of these 3 insurers

https://online.muangthaiinsurance.com/webapps/mti/secure_apps/MTIProducts.aspx

https://itravel.kpi.co.th/ITRAVELWEB/index.do

http://www.siamcityinsurance.com/travel_entry.php

And only the last one offers 90 days option. I have no idea what it means, will give them a go next time I need to purchase TTS for someone.
