Laws concerning the qualification of candidates contesting local elections must be amended before the general election can be held, chief charter drafter Meechai Ruchupan has said.

The government is discussing whether local elections will be held ahead of the national election and legal amendments have been raised.

Deputy PM Wissanu Krea-ngam said he would discuss the matter with concerned parties, including the Constitution Drafting Commission, which is drafting the organic laws.

Meechai said the election cannot take place within one or two months as the related laws need to be amended first.

He said the Election Commission can still go ahead with its work in organising the elections in local areas.

Local elections are normally supervised by the EC, although under the new law there will no longer be provincial ECs.

Political parties, he said, could support their candidates, but it is up to the National Council for Peace and Order to decide when to lift the ban on political gatherings.

I sense a further delay looming.

They have had 4 years to sort this out.

First they made a law, now they have to change their law in order to not break that law.

?? no wonder the Thai are confused.

The Amazing the lack of swiftness for an election is off set by the  incredible swiftness in buying military hardware.

This is getting really boring.

Just tell the public that you'll know elections when you see them.

And keep your platitudes to yourself.

This guy should ask his daughter he just hired.

Ok new laws

Local elections  Candidates must be about the rank of  Sargent

National Elections  Candidates must be Generals

Only 2 names on Ballot papers so not to confuse the Thai voters first name on Ballot paper must be a General and the second candidate must have respectable job like  Street sweeper or lower and over 60 years of age and an alcoholic

Look, we must be pragmatic about this.

The main purpose of these laws will be to enable the disqualification of those elements amongst the elected who are not desirable - not "good people" if you like.

It therefore stands to reason that the laws enabling such disqualification cannot be finally promulgated until it is known exactly who is to be disqualified, and on what grounds.

Don't worry too much old mate Meechai,  Thaksin will sort out the amendments after he wins the election your constitution was drafted solely to distort. Sucks to be a loser hey?

They make laws...enact them and the announce that amendments need to be made.......so obviously to suit Junta rule!

It's becoming a wasted state here......rapidly.

A couple of months after amendment but no timeline own when the amendments can be expected....and the beat goes on....
