13 injured, including 12 students, in Phichit road accident

By The Nation

Twelve students were injured on Wednesday evening when their pickup truck was hit by another pickup, whose driver was also severely injured in Phichit province.

The students' pickup had reportedly been modified into a transport vehicle.

Police said the accident happened at 5.50pm on the Nakhon Sawan-Phitsanulok Road in Tambon Thanong's Moo 6 village, Thalay district.

Police said the pickup, which was transporting students home after school, was hit on the right side, sending it crashing into a tree on the roadside.

The impact caused the students to be thrown out of the vehicle onto the road.

Police said Amphai Klaydee, the driver of the second pickup, was severely injured.

Thongsuk Hunklay, 48, the driver of the students' vechicle, said he was bringing the students home when his vehicle was hit by Amphai's pickup, which he said was speeding.

until travelling in the back of pickups is made illegal with big fines a lot more people will be killed and or injured , I understand its the cheapest way to get somewhere for a lot of people but is it worth the huge loss of life and all the injuries incurred .

A songtaew then ?

Sounds like Thailand is just cementing it,s position as the home of the world,s worst drivers :)

Students were thrown by the impact out of the pickup. Unless they all flew out an open back entrance, sounds like a partial songtaew design having no top and/or side cage - maybe benches only? A picture would help.

Most of the school bus/songtaews up here look something like this vehicle.

It would be fairly hard to be thrown out the side of one of these.   Related image

I have never seen one as overloaded as this one in my area         .image.jpeg.6e89fc01f3aaa5de17b55b071e0892c4.jpeg

This school transport vehicle was hit side on by a speeding pickup driven by Mr Amphai now resting peacefully in hospital. 12 students is not overload as there is usually sufficient seating. This is the most common form of student transport in rural areas of this country and given the hundreds of thousands of students transported every week, these accidents are actually not that common. It appears the school 'bus' operator did no wrong.

Almost every day an accident and students either killed cor injured and STILL the Government and POLICE rerfuse to act, blaming everything, but drivers and lack of ENFORCEMENT , when will anyone wake up to the sheer incompetence of the Government/Enforcement and Drivers, regarding these accidents................Too much loss of face I assume .....................

A photo I took. The stupidity of the school and driver transporting these students is simply mind-boggling. And what would the parents think if they saw it. Nothing, probably. How these people are unable to see the danger is beyond stupid.

If police did their job all day every day the number of accidents would be halved over night.

The law Was made in Thailand   in 1979 that it is Illegal  for a person to travel in the cargo area of a pickup truck.

Thais  are always in a haste without any important ahead of them. This is totally disgusting. :sorry:

Modified? It had seating in the cargo bed? Or sleeping bags?

It was purportedly made illegal last Songkran. Then the PM broke into a cold sweat over inconveniencing Thais over New Year, so he postponed it, with some restrictions. Lo and behold, here we are approaching 2018, and it's still on the back burner.

The simple answer is yes... most Thais think it is worth the risk of injury or death, which is why police are apt to turn a blind eye, especially during school run time!

In an ideal western society there would be regulations and checks to make sure this sort of thing can't happen.  However this is Thailand and they have their own rules and priorities.  It is their country and up to them.

The horrific, tragic and constant loss of life on the roads here is ignored by all authority.

Until someone learns the meaning of responsibility it will continue.

Thai mindset does not include safety

Not if it has been modified into a songtaew configuration.

"The students' pickup had reportedly been modified into a transport vehicle."

This set up would be illegal, but still allowed by the cops in many areas  .Road Safety 1.jpg
