Construction of Thai-Chinese high-speed railway to begin in December

The Transport Ministry is confident the construction of the 3.5-kilometre section of the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway between Klang Dong – Pang Asok stations in Nakhon Ratchasima province will begin in December since the environmental impact assessment report for it has been completed, Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said.

 

The construction of the 3.5-km section of the railway between Klang Dong and Pang Asok stations in Nakhon Ratchasima has been delayed because the EIA report is still pending approval, Mr Arkhom said after a meeting of the committee on the management of the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway project on Wednesday (Nov 15).

 

The railway’s first phase will connect Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima, with the second phase linking Nakhon Ratchasima and Nong Khai.

 

Mr Arkhom said the EIA report has been sent to the Office of the Natural Resources and Environment Policy and Planning for consideration for the 7th time and a representative of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said it is already completed.

 

It is believed the EIA report will be forwarded to a cabinet meeting in November and the construction will start in mid-December, he said.

Well underway in Khonkaen, new station going in and raised tracks through the city, And lots of new drive over bridges being built..

Not saying the fast train will be here anytime soon, but what they are doing and the speed it is being constructed is very admirable.

I want to live long enough to see a high speed  train from here, Chiang Mai,  to BKK and even Chiang Rai!  Well I'm only 74 so surely I'm not dreaming?! Ha haha! 

But good to see definite progress elsewhere. 

I love trains as a means of transport and so pleased to read about the raiway renaissance everywhere-  an environmental benefit for all of us.

Get out of our polluting, environmentally damaging unsafe cars and trucks asap!

I think this may be a "smoke screen."

When Prayut invoked Article 44 to expedite the project, he waived all legal impediments including the EIA that could affect the start of construction. The more likely cause is the delay of Chinese designs for this project segment, albeit perhaps forestalled for example by slow acquisition of  rights of way by Thai authorities. To avoid criticism of the government (which has been frequent lately) it would be easy to blame a now active EIA process.

Look over here and not over there.

That's for Khon Kaen's Skytrain, not the High Speed link

I suspect that what you're seeing is this different project, part of upgrading the existing metre-gauge line, and nothing to do with the proposed new Chinese medium-speed line.

As the OP says, construction of even just the 3.5km test-track for the latter has not yet started.

And all that work is just for the double track metre gauge railway.

The whole line from Khon Kaen to Korat is one big building project.

May the Chinese strategic railway stay away for a very, very long time.

Not late enough.

The upgrading of the existing system should be finished first.

It certainly does not need a Chinese competition.

But the Chinese medium-speed mainly-freight line will only compete, with the SRT metre-gauge network (upgraded or otherwise) on the North-Eastern line & the branch into Laem Chabang.

 

With foresight it may well even feed container-freight, with a change-of-gauge, into the existing network and onwards to the rest of Thailand ?

 

I doubt that the SRT will track-double/upgrade the N.E.-line further, than what's already done/underway, that would be a waste of money, now that the Chinese line looks more-likely to be built.

RR signal & control equipment and train carriage system provided and installed by the Chinese. But Thailand will be constructing the infrastructure (grading, bridges, tunnels, stations, road gates) and laying the track. Shoddy Thai workmanship will likely be the earliest cause of casualties.

It is not for the tram system it is upgrading the existing train lines as others have stated, it is quiet big the new station so I suppose they have built to incorporate the new Chinese bullets:biggrin:

3.5km.  Is that window dressing for am election or what?   Why start with such a small stage?  When are we hoping to get some tech specs such as gauge, projected train speed and how much of it will be double tracked?  Let alone a completion date that is not borrowed from Monty Python......

I hope to be proven wrong but it is hard for a Farang to remain positive  about some of these projects when the only information given seems to be based on  vague suppositions by officials who know nothing and reported by journalists who do not seem to know how to ask obvious questions.

..".road gates..............'. On a high Speed Railway system? Not likely, too dangerous.Bridges and tunnels, yes.

Didn't say road gates crossing tracks. Just in connection with infrastructure. Also note the system will also carry container cargo shipments obviously not at high speed. Once saw an artist rendering of one track for high speed passenger and one for cargo but can't find it now.

Believe it when you see it. Just the other day they announced they wouldn't accept the loan conditions of the Chinese. Nothing this government says is believable. The Thai-Japanese high speed train line is supposed to commence construction this month. And I will wager money that won't happen. Prayut now says he doesn't want it to go fast; instead he wants a slow high-speed train.

This military government is full of dreams, plenty of doublespeak, lots of wasted money and no action. Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter would be proud of them.
