Plans and other details for new mega irrigation projects in the lower Chao Phraya River Basin are being prepared to present to the National Water Resource Committee (NWRC) under the government’s plan to solve the flood problem in the region.

Royal Irrigation Department (RID) director-general Somkiat Prajamwong headed a meeting with officers and representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on Thursday at the RID Office in Samsen district.

They discussed possible implementation plans for the Pasak-to-Gulf of Thailand flood drainage canal project, and the third ring-road parallel irrigation canal project.

It was reported that this meeting was a consequence of conclusions made at a meeting on October 27 to discuss flood-mitigation plans for the Chao Phraya River. The meeting reportedly approved prioritising projects to speed up the drainage of water downstream from the Chao Phraya into the Gulf, plus two irrigation projects that would open new routes for water drainage into the sea.

RID and related agencies will have to prepare a plan and provide details of these two giant irrigation projects in an upcoming meeting with the NWRC.
