Thai masseuses warned about Korean sex networks

By THE SUNDAY NATION

THE DEPARTMENT of Special Investigation (DSI) has issued a warning to Thai women planning to work as traditional masseuses in South Korea, following the arrests of key members of a Thai-Korean criminal network soliciting sex workers.

DSI director-general Pol Colonel Paisit Wongmuang said masseuse is not a legal occupation in South Korea, hence Thai women should beware of criminals soliciting innocent persons on social media platforms to work in that country.

According to non-government organisations, a growing number of Thais have been lured to South Korea to work as traditional Thai masseuses, and then been forced to work as prostitutes.

Paisit said the women’s passports would be taken away and they would be closely watched around the clock by members of the criminal network.

South Korean police have recently cracked down on prostitution dens, rescuing victims and arresting eight Korean members of an alleged human trafficking and prostitution-soliciting network who are now facing criminal charges.

The South Korean police investigation subsequently expanded to Thailand. Cooperation with the DSI has resulted in arrest warrants being issued for seven other Koreans and three Thai accomplices. These include an alleged key member of the criminal |network, Kim Hyoung-joon, who was arrested in August.

On Friday, the DSI also arrested another suspect, Chatchadaporn Charernnet, at Don Mueang Airport. Chatchadaporn is said to have worked as an agent to solicit innocent women to work in South Korea via social media platforms by falsely suggesting that the women would be working in decent Thai massage parlours with free accommodation, benefits and a good income.

But these women would be in fact forced into prostitution upon their arrival in South Korea.

The DSI has warned Thais to be careful when encouraged on social media to go and work in Korea. They say some victims voluntarily went to Korea using tourist visas but they did not expect to work in hostile conditions far away from city areas.

There are also human trafficking networks soliciting women to work illegally in Malaysia, Singapore and the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the DSI and the Royal Thai Navy yesterday jointly arrested a key suspect in a human trafficking case in the Gulf of Thailand.

They claim he is part of a criminal network responsible for luring innocent people to work on fishing vessels in hostile conditions.

Along with three other suspects, Thanongsak Mahasubsakorn, from Songkhla province, was arrested at sea, aboard a fishing vessel about 40 kilometres off the coast of Nakhon Si Thammarat province. He is facing charges of human |trafficking.

Is it only me or everyone else in the world knows a Thai masseuse

and a Thai massage, in many cases and places around the world,

including Thailand, (not all) is synonymous for good time and

a happy ending? .there have been so many cases in the past where

unsuspecting Thai women have lured into such situations that

by now the penny should have dropped already.....

The kinky part of massage is where the money is. They know exactly what they're getting themselves in for 99/100 of the time.

The real problem is not that they are getting themselves into something

that they are not aware of it is they are not being paid the agreed amount.

I like the add on about the Thai fisherman.

Regards the massage, there is a lot of difference between $200 to $10,000 per week. The one's at $200 get into debt and have to move up the massage scale. They are also jealous of the one's earning the big bucks. Its sad as I would think the one's that are not sending money back loose face and fall between the cracks. A very sad industry if you are not prepared for it.

I didn't study the subject, I just made an assumption. You can plus/minus as you wish. I reckon 99% of massueses in Thailand have engaged in extra services for money, and i think you're pretty dumb if you can't digest that.

Services are where they make cash, even in the straight up shops their salary is always basic with the aim that they supplement it with tips for providing an excellent (non erotic) service. Those who go far and beyond, maybe even enjoy it and make a killing to boot.

Those who go overseas to anywhere other than a 5 star hotel, know the risks from the word on the street and ignore that warning in favour of the success stories.

Occasionally some get into legit private services and make a decent living without having to get dirty. I knew one lady who was hired in house by a residence in the Middle East to treat only ladies in the household at their private pool/spa. She worked tops 2 hours a day, although sometimes summoned at all hours for prologued sessions. She had a car provided and all food/ board. When she returned home to Thailand for one month she was begged to come back to treat grandma for a 300,000 baht bonus to cut her holiday short. Someone not so lucky could wind up in a dodgy household with weird males trying all sorts of things. It is risky.

There are plenty of horror stories. Different country different lure, Thailand is no different - only this year a crackdown has seen a Laos/Cambodian purge. I dont think they came for the work experience/ opportunity either, they came for the money.

What exactly was your point? Do you know any better?

Enlighten me

Once upon a time in my distant past life, a massage with a happy ending, and maybe more, cost a whopping 60 baht for an hour of steam, massage and cream. Now. It seems all ballsied up and I am confused. Do I need to go to S. Korea for a happy massage or can I still get one on soi 4 in Bangkok? Anyone saying these girls do not know what lies ahead of them  are probably guessing, like me, but I think Thai girls, girls of any nationality, can usually figure out what constitutes a massage, after the age of , well, just at too young an age.

  • 1 month later...

I know many a girls who went to Korea with no intention of giving any service other than massage and I pray that they were able to stick to their intention,. Call me gullible if you wish, but I have a few decades experience on the matter and I think I know what I am talking about: I am talking about honest, respectable girls with a naivety and family circumstances dire beyond the understanding of the average farang.

Those who write here saying that 99% of the girls working in massage parlours are engaged in sexual activities, and those who write that girls who go to Korea know exactly what they are going into should reconsider their views, as many girls go without having a clue where they are going or what they are getting into, they just follow friends after they have tried all the options they could find at home to make a living.

Many thai girls in Korea work 24/7, that means, they are available anytime a customer walks in, day or night. Often they are prohibited from leaving the shop because of fear of police spotting them in the streets, so they are confined inside the shop virtually all the time. They have the choice of paying the air ticket by themselves (which they often don't know how to do) and take the risk of losing the money if they are rejected at immigration and sent back to BKK, or they can let their future boss buy the ticket, paying it double the amount through their work, which means the first month or two of their work is unpaid (they work for free).

Some of the views expressed here seem to lack respect for many girls who did not have the opportunity to get a proper education to life from their families not to mention from a formal education or professional training and I do not for a moment believe they enjoy going to live in a shop in a foreign country far away from their families at the mercy of a boss who can easily decide not to pay them if they don't behave as he sees fit. They do not go for one or two months... they go for one or two years, or more, unless they are caught, imprisoned and - if the boss pays the fine - repatriated to their life as it was before...

Sounds harsh, but sometimes it's useful to look at things as they really are...

While I am willing to believe there are girls who have no idea of what may happen to them in a foreign country; I seriously doubt it is the majority or even a considerable number. A common fear held by girls and their parents throughout Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines over 50 years ago was to not let your daughters leave country for work, vacation or even marriage; because they would be sold for sex. In the years since, some girls may have had fine experiences overseas, but far too many have been sexually used. I doubt the known potential for sexual abuse simply went away.

Oh, yes sure I agree with you. I experienced concerns on my girlfriends family, who knew me well, when I wanted to go on holiday with her in Myanmar, because they were afraid I may sell her away lol.

But this example only helps me to illustrate my point in a clearer way than i did before. It shows the ignorance (a relative term) of some/many of the girls and the families which educated them... the key to read this matter is therefore not to use our own informed judgement but rather using the less informed and devoid of reference points judgement of the girls. This then generates situations in which a girl is concerned of going on holiday with her boyfriend (near nonsense) but such a simple mind is easily manipulated and convinced to go there where the danger really is. So, my point is - there are yes prejudices, awareness and fear - of being sexually exploited abroad, but they are in the eyes of often naive and ignorant girls. This leads me to agree with you that most of the girls are aware that there is danger out there somewhere, but that 'many', I don't necessarily say 'most', once they make the step have been somehow convinced that it's ok to go, whatever that means in their mind.

Whether we are talking of 'many', or talking of 'most', I think both differ from the 99% which was mentioned above, a virtuous way to say 'virtually all girls', which I disagree with. :)

You seem to want to use the knowledge of potential sexual abuse to justify your statements that not many knew. I don't follow that.  However, I too feel 99% is no more than exaggeration.

Hi Smotherb, I am just saying is that if somebody is ignorant then he/she can be easily manipulated. For those girls to whom this applies (many or most, whatever that is), it's unfair to say that they make a conscious decision to go there and do sex, some of them don't do it, and some of them don't know they will be forced into it (I think a minority will be forced), whilst others may be induced or tempted into it when they are there. Fundamentally though many are not armed with the same rational ability or life experience that we may assume. At least that's my view.

However, I think this is plenty for a forum conversation. Beyond this it should become verbal, so let's leave it there :)

Bye, have a good eve.

You seem to have missed what I was saying; taking girls overseas for the sex trade is common knowledge and nothing new. Girls may hope for a good deal, but very few girls are totally ignorant that the sex trade may be on the other end.

I know 2 girls, close friends. That can confirm your story. One went to S. Korea for a massage job, and she was stuck there and is still stuck there after 1 year. Another got a job in a Thai restaurant, and couldn't come home until her debt was paid to the owner. The restaurant was a scam for prostitution.

That's what they say. Don't mean it's true. They know they are going to sell sex. The only issue is that they get paid in an honest way. It used to be Japan they flocked to...They know exactly what they are doing.. It's called working.

Close to you, or each other?

If close to you, I suppose they politely declined your help to get them out of these circumstances?

My GF got her licenses, but decided not to continue as a masseuse because "Too many want extra!" There you have a pretty darned bright woman who has lived in Thailand for fifty years, and who was not aware of the prevalence until she actually got involved in the massage trade. I guess "good girls" just do not speak about it much.

I think you're pretty dumb if you really believe that! Traditional massage is an ancient part of the culture in Thailand that is associated with health and well being, the sex part is only a small fraction of the massage business and is a modern development, but not so in tourist centres such as Pattaya and Phuket.

The majority of Thai women know exactly what they are getting into when they apply for massage work abroad, it`s only when the job does not meet their expectations are then considered sex slaves.

Thai women are working in the sex industries all over S.E. Asia, Sri Lanka, India, the Middle East and many western countries. It could be said that one of Thailand`s biggest exports are Thai prostitutes, they even form into a category of their own.

The Philippines biggest export is its people, the income from which is it's largest fee earner, are all those people prostitutes also, given that they represent a significant proportion of the nursing industry worldwide!

Unpleasant generalisation. I reply only to defend the honour of those girls who accept low salary, working conditions which western people would consider slavery but still do not accept to engage in sex. There are many girls working abroad who do not do sex, I know it with reasonable certainty, there are many who go out looking for it, there are many who do not seek it but end up doing happy endings and only that, and there are girls who have no idea of what's going on in their life, just follow friends and it's only their luck if they are not exploited. I know this will debate is sterile so happy to leave my word here and give you a chance to reply but I won't reply further.

Yes and no.

In the UK for example, masseuse has become a synonymous for prostitute. Not in all cases, but most. Usually massage parlours outside of Thailand are fronts for some types of brothels or involve sexual services. The same applies in Australia and in Sri Lanka where Spas are normally glorified brothels. All this has been well publicised so when Thai women apply for massage jobs abroad, it should not be a surprise for them when the job involves providing some extras.

It is true that Thai girls working in Thailand at normal jobs maybe earning a pittance having to put in long hours, that the prospects of working abroad doing some types of sex work believing they are going to earn big money must appear very appealing to them. But it doesn`t mean they are naive and have no idea what they are getting into. Sorry, I don`t believe otherwise.
