Driver missing after fatal bus crash

One passenger was killed and eight others injured when a bus overturned in Phitsanulok's Nakhon Thai district early on Monday.

 

Police said the accident happened at 4.30am on a downward hill on the Phitsanulok-Lomsak road in Ban Huay Sai Nua village, Tambon Huay Hia.

 

Suchada Sakcharoenkul, 23, from Khao Khor district in Phetchabun, died at the district hospital and the driver's helper, Aroonsak Kunkaew, 31, was also among the injured.

 

Police said the bus, travelling from Bangkok to Khao Khor via Sukhothai, had apparently been speeding, veered off the road at a bend on the hill and overturned as the driver tried to bring it back under control. Instead, the bus hit a concrete barrier at the side of the road and overturned.

 

The engine at the back of the bus also caught fire, causing a panic as passengers tried desperately to escape the overturned vehicle, according to Aroonsak.

 

He said the bus had left Bangkok at 10pm on Sunday with more than 30 passengers. Most had got off at Phitsanulok bus station at 3am while a further nine were due to get off in Phetchabun.

 

Aroonsak said he dozed off and was woken by the accident, after which the driver, Nane Phanboon, 50, disappeared. Aroonsak said Nane would not answer his phone when he called him.

 

Warakorn Sukhuphak said the accident happened when the bus was travelling at a high speed.

Well, of course the driver ran off.  I would only be surprised if a driver DIDN'T run off. 

 

Again another speeding run away gutless driver ! when will authorities EVER crack down on the kind of so called drivers !

Hummmm, my guess would be - NEVER

 

Never mind. He'll turn up in a few days, after the alcohol has worn off, claiming he had to leave the scene because he had something very important to take care of. 

He'll wai and apologize a few times, check in to a temple for a few days and then he'll be behind the wheel of another bus a little while after that. 

It's like an inbuilt reaction for bus drivers on some sub concious level "crash bus ,flee the scene"

Not just bus drivers.  While they may be the most noticeable, the fact is, EVERY Thai who can walk (run) or drive away from ANY accident, will do so as quickly as they can.  Bus, pick up, car, motorbike, it doesn't matter.

Too true the s41t should be jailed,,, but hey ho T1T - they accept the wai and apology--oooh maybe a couple of thousand Baht as well.

Remember that over here, unlike where we come from, remaining at the scene of the accident could result in one (the driver) being beaten to death, regardless of fault or resposibilty for the accident.

 

though despicable, especially the recent crash where students died and were injured and the driver ran away instead of helping the youngsters, but do not blame the individual, it is the culture. thais' are brought up to not accept, and to not have to accept, responsibility for their actions. children being taught about responsibility and consequences by parents and schools would be beneficial, and a police force that actually did its job combined with a judicial system with appropriate penalties for law breakers are vital if any change is to occur.

 

also the mai pen rai, head in the sand culture and attitude of grass roots people and those in power who simply ignore and/or choose to do absolutely nothing about the death and destruction going on every day on thai roads. very sad.

 

thailand, like any country, has positive aspects to its culture but the negatives are very damaging to the people and country.

Nothing new here! Except Thailand wants to retain No.1 in road deaths. Must be a prize given by UN to countries that stay No.1?

Well, of course the driver ran off.  I would only be surprised if a driver DIDN'T run off.

Same same every day , I don't think I will bother to open up tomorrow's bus crash.

True. Not very Buddhist of them is it.

They should impose very heavy fines on the bus companies, then they may check who they employ more carefully .....BUT I wouldn't hold my breath

Perhaps when the Thai parliament should add a law to the books that drivers in accidents that cause injury or fatalities who flee from the scene have a mandatory sentence of, say, a year or two in jail, then perhap that nonsense stops. <here - I'm going to hold my breath now 'uwwwpppp'>
