Pattaya's finest investigated after a Norwegian tourist went to the cops to say that he was the victim of a snatch theft while out strolling in the Pratumnak Hill area of South Pattaya on Thursday.

"Yohansson" ,29, said two youthful Thai men on a motorbike had grabbed his bag and disappeared with valuables worth 30,000 baht.

He then asked for a police report describing the theft as "outrageous".

Mindful that this could be another damaging good-image-buster for the resort chief Apichai Krobpetch sent an investigation team to the area to check CCTV and interview witnesses to find the thieves.

It soon became apparent, however, that there was no snatch theft - the Norwegian had just made it all up.

Pressure on the tourist soon yielded an admission and a search of his room found the wireless headphones, Sony phone, Ray Ban sunnies and 3,300 baht in cash he claimed had been stolen.

The cops took all that away with them as evidence then dressed the tourist up in a full face helmet to conceal his identity and charged him with making a false claim. The tourist said he wanted to get a police report to make money from insurance.

Sanook did not explain why the tourist was heartily shaking the hand of the smiling Pattaya station chief as seen in our picture this morning.

Apichai said snatch theft was giving the resort a bad name but this was not one of those.

He warned any Thai or foreigner about making false claims for insurance saying that wrong-doers would be arrested and prosecuted to protect the image of Pattaya and Thailand.

The Thai police force, not very good at solving murders, but fraud? now you've hit their area of expertise!

He might have had a better chance saying he got mugged when he was waiting for a bar girl to come back from the toilet, but not before leaping over a balcony and breaking his leg.

Guess he'd read on TV that none of the CCTV cameras work. Whoops.

But what a shock--one of the quality whose absence we mourn daily, one of the few great Golden Egg Layers who hasn't fled to Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, or Spain.

The handshake is indeed weird. Are they now besties?

Even more weird, he's still wearing the handcuffs.   Probably just the miscreant trying to ingratiate himself out of the fix he put himself in.   Or maybe just grateful he's not getting what he deserves,,,,,, whatever the reason for that...

But the rest of the story really is that dim bulbs wouldn't even be trying this stuff on if Pattaya didn't have the reputation that it has for grab & snatch.

I guess that the police are delighted that he confessed, deserves a handshake I think. It is only a scam which has failed, no harm done.

It would be a shame on Pattaya if it were true, and since it isn't, it is a shame on foreigners in Pattaya.

BTW, Yohansson is not a Norwegian name if a name at all - Johansson is Swedish and Johansen is Norwegian....

Anyway - this is not about the name, but all about a "fool" and his "Money" which both got lost after entering Pattaya's "red light" area...;)

So it's saving community image and not the possible commission of a crime that motivated police?

What an odd priority.
