Very lethargic Thought it was dead,,, til I prodded it with a stick about a metre long and not so sluggish,,, neither was I!

I think it is an ordinary rat snake but cannot be sure as not the best view in that photo and by the time I've enlarged it enough it is blurred.

if i could see its head it would help,

Looks like a Chinese Rat Snake, surprised it was lethargic when prodded as these things can be very quick and vicious. We have had a number of run ins with the, they play dead for a while then just take off, they will slither at highspeed towards you too as if you were not there. Not deadly, but can give you a nasty bite, the fangs point rearwards and apparently they will use a grinding motion that can make your hand or whatever a real mess.

My wife once tried to "Shoo" one 2 metre version away with a broom, it went mental and tried chasing her to attack - Unfortunately I was unable to trip her up as she tried to run away.

Yes, it looks like a rat snake...but remember there are 35 venomous snakes in Thailand (36 if you count the Thai woman). In the last 3 yrs we have killed 17 snakes on my land, and my dogs have killed 7 of them. I have killed 5 cobras, 2 red head and 1 Malayan pit. And this is why my dogs sleep in the house to keep the snakes out!

My wife who was brought up in the jungle has two main categories for explaining these things

1. no problem

2 . very danger

Sub categories are

1. No hurt

2. Hurt

3. Very hurt

4. Can kill dead

According to her this one falls in the category of no problem but hurt . Always find it amusing that she never knows the real names of the critters but I always trust her knowledge of these things as it has been passed down through generations

Another name for upcoming book?

Looks like a common Keelback to me, cause ratsnakes are usually pretty fast on the ground.

But I am against killing of snakes. And they do not want to be around humans and given the chance will slither off asap.

Is that to hit it with?

People who kill snakes are ting tongs.

Dead snakes don't bite. Live ones do. Not rocket science is it.

But alive ting tongs ...

you can join thailandsnakes facebook page and try there.  They are good at identifying them.

Looking at the markings it looks like a malay racer.

dont talk about killing snakes,dogs,..........

many snake -eyed farangs are waiting for those comments , they rather see a child bitten by a snake , than a snake killed by the father.

Also a raging dog ,is your own mistake .....if your child is bitten in the face ....they will put the blame on the child ,never on the holy -dog owner.........

So better never mention it here ..........

With the possible exception of Malayan Pit Vipers which cannot be relied to behave them selves.  Run away, do nothing and wait till you have moved away or attack without warning.  I have killed several who did not attack but most accounts describe them as unpredictable.

Yep... it’s a “don’t f*** with me” snake, but then, I’m australian, where all snakes are “don’t f*** with me” snakes.

that said.... get closer next time, when you take the picture ????

seriously though, the amount of bends (for want of not knowing the correct word) suggests that it has a long striking range, so beware

also... the picture seems to show a flattened tail, although that may just be markings on the road/path...... flat tail snakes are often water snakes of one description or another

For me, snakes and electricity are the two most scary things on this planet.... both are usually invisible prior to death.

I understand that in Australia they have 21 of the 25 most venomous snakes in the world! Some 100 Australian snakes are venomous.

Life is good in Thailand.

Most snake bites are the result of cornering a snake and attacking it.

There are no poisonous snakes except in the genus Rhabdophis. Two examples are the Tiger and Red Knecked Keelbacks. The poison is secreted through glands on the neck. The Red Neck can be found in Thailand. Below is one I found last month entering my house.
