Tourism boost predicted for New Year

The Tourism Authority of Thailand expects that foreign and Thai tourists will spend some Bt15.56 billion from December 29 to January 2, TAT governor Yutthasak Supasorn said on Monday.

 

Based on air ticket and accommodation reservations, about 420,000 foreign tourists are expected to visit Thailand during the New Year holidays period, an increase of 17 per cent on last year, Yutthasak said, while they were expected to spend Bt6.5 billion in Thailand, an increase of 30 per cent.

 

He said about 2.48 million Thais would travel and visit tourist destinations during the same period, a decrease of four per cent, but their spending would rise by two per cent to about Bt8.994 billion.

How on earth can one predict spending, by a collection of individuals, about whose financial resources or intentions you have no idea, to an accuracy of two decimal places on a billion between two arbitrary dates?

This gem of a prediction is from T.A.T., The recently departed Kobkarn was with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, a different organisation.  They have to justify their existence somehow.
