I am a staunch atheist, but I love Christmas. Not for god-bothering reasons though.

 

But Merry Christmas to you too!

I say it all the time, always have and always will.   It's just some times easier than having to add the Happy New Year, or Happy Boxing Day or Happy whatever.    I am not nearly that PC.

Well this is the season of goodwill, so i feel sorry for this member, who has no goodwill love in his heart.

Personally I prefer to celebrate Epiphany which will be January 6, 2018 or the 12th day of Christmas as in the song.  No crowds, easy to get flights and hotels, after-Christmas sales, etc.

 

... and besides, that is the day The Kid actually got HIS presents.

Let's turn this into a teaching moment and talk about the real reason for Christmas. It has absolutely nothing to do with the birth of anyone called Jesus. Instead, it is the new incarnation of the Roman celebration of the winter solstice, which honored the god Saturn...hence the name Saturnalia.

 

When the early Christians were trying to attract followers to their new religion, they realized that Saturnalia was an integral part of the culture of the day. So they invented a new story to map on top of the pagan ritual, and that made it easier to sell their religion, since people weren't about to change their cultural traditions.

 

Finally, about 400 years later, this little trick was made official and Saturnalia became Christmas.

 

So let's all remember the real meaning behind this holiday...the celebration of the winter solstice. I invite everyone to join me in asking a gas ball orbiting 1.5 billion km from the Sun to give us a good harvest next year.
