I was told by a Thai woman that only three on a motorbike/cycle is unlawful and ticket material. Three on a bicycle? I don't know.

I read this from the wrong angle, at first; that she was saying that it's unlawful to have only 3 on a bike, i.e. that the law is that you must have more than 3 . . . . that would be fun!

Pun intended!

Driver does not buckle up = fine!
Pick-up back of people on the way home = fine!

And then the world in general and Thais in particular wonder, why Thailand made it to the top position on the "world's most dangerous countries to drive" - now how godforsaken ignorant and stupid is that!

You assume there is a system for this? How long have you been in Thailand.

As for the driver paying, it all depends on whom is going against whom, knowing that the wealthier is always right...

Yes the wealthier farang is always right so no need to pay .

One of the many 'unique' things in Thailand is that the Government will tell the people something is 'against the law' but will equally encourage them to 'break the law'.     How can they ever expect a law abiding society; it will just never happen whilst the so called 'leaders' use double standards on a daily basis ?

Does that mean they will not implement the Death Penalty for possessing that Class C drug....Viagra?

We will be lenient with the ban on passengers in pickup beds but drivers must be very careful, especially when applying the brakes,” Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said.

He added that motorcyclists and pillion riders must wear safety helmets.

“Those travelling in cars must have safety belts too,” he added.

Prayut also urged people to not criticise officials who would be strictly enforcing traffic laws for road safety.

the military coup was consistent with the long thai tradition but whats this, now the general is trying to destroy thainess

You can ride in the back of a pickup truck during the New Year holiday season despite it being against the law,

i see , now breaking the law is legal; nice

Pickups can also carry children to school and tourists. Duh.

For all those who believe that riding in the tray of a Pickup Truck should be banned, what is the law in other countries? In the USA it is legal to do so, with some restrictions imposed at state level. I'm sure it is also legal in some other countries. It was pretty standard in the Australian outback when i lived there, although that was some years ago.

In reality, for many Thais it is the only practical way to travel if a large group. You cannot just ban it and therefore prevent families from travelling together where they have few alternatives, and probably safer than a motorbike. Never seen a tuk-tuk or songthaew with seatbelts either.

Sure, legislate to make it safer (e.g. speed limits, only sitting inside) but banning it outright is just not practical.

I was very surprised the other day when I took the bus from Ekkamai to Pattaya.

For the first time they demanded everyone to fasten their seat belts ! The lady in charge would not let the bus driver go until all the passengers was checked, just like in an airplane .

So this is good news , they actually teach their passengers to wear the belt. I wonder if it will happen on my next trip.

The funny side of it is the bus driver does not have a seat belt installed so he is not going to make it if we crash.

The law in Thailand has been in place for many years but never enforced..... surprise surprise.

It is banned in the UK.  In the States, it's banned in some states, restricted in others and legal in the rest.

It is quite crazy when passengers inside the vehicle are fined for not wearing a belt when the dozen or so standing like sardines in the back are okay!

He'll jump out as soon as he falls asleep . . . 's obvious!

No seat belt for the driver is so they can do the usual.

In case of accident and you survive, do a runner...

The reason some drivers - not just bus drivers -

'do a runner" is because they are  worried about the actions of the police. It isn't like the procedures in the ""West"

If the insurance representative doesn't show up before them, it is very likely that the driver will be locked up. To avoid this the insurance company has to put up bail, without the rep there, the police will quite likely lock up anyone they consider to be a witness or in any way relevant to the incident until they can "work out" what happened. As they are appallingly bad at doing this, it can lead to all sorts of complications. so it is much better for the driver or anyone else to avoid the police until they have contacted the insurance company and got legal advice.

They also do it because they are afraid of ghosts .

I would have thought that to change a law in most first world countries there is a lengthy process involving some intelligent ministers that discuss the matter at length. As this particular law is now on its second u turn it doesn't appear to be the case here.

The law banning passengers in the back of pickups has been on the books for years but, surprise surprise, hardly ever enforced.  There is no new law just misdirected 'leniency' on an existing law.

2 main reasons to do a runner:

1. avoid an angry mob;

2. let any illegal substances out of the system.

Your explanation has no bearing on reality whatsoever.

Like a few people have said wear a crash helmet in the back, before anyone says a stupid idea thats what motorcyclists are told to wear and it gives them no more protection than sitting in the back of a truck.
