Israel wants to build "Trump station" near Western Wall

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel wants to name a train station after Donald Trump to thank him for recognising Jerusalem as its capital, but the site of the planned building could be as divisive as the U.S. president's declaration.

Transport Minister Israel Katz said on Wednesday he had chosen a proposed subway stop near the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City - right in the middle of the area that the Palestinians want as their own future capital.

"I have decided to name the Western Wall station ... after U.S. President Donald Trump for his courageous and historic decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish people and the State of Israel," Katz said in a statement.

The envisaged underground extension of a high-speed rail link between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem is still on the drawing board and a transport ministry spokeswoman said other departments still needed to approve it.

The announcement was quickly condemned by Palestinian leaders already angered by Trump's Dec. 6 decision to overturn decades of U.S. policy on the city.

"The Israeli extremist government is trying to race against time to impose facts on the ground in the city of Jerusalem," Wasel Abu Youssef, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization's Executive Committee, told Reuters.

Trump has said he was simply acknowledged the reality on the ground by recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital - but the Palestinians and most world powers have said he undermined the long-held position that Jerusalem's status must be settled by future negotiations.

A ministry spokeswoman said the proposed station and underground extension still required the approval of various governmental planning committees, and gave no date for when a final go-ahead might be given. She said she did not know where funds for the estimated $700-million rail add-on would come from.

Israel considers all of Jerusalem its capital. Palestinians want East Jerusalem - among whose shrines is Islam's third-holiest mosque, Al-Aqsa - as the capital of a state they seek in the occupied West Bank and in the Gaza Strip.

the US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley recently announced that the US is cutting $285 million in funds to the UN. What to do with that savings ... hmm?

That's (again) more about domestic politics. The minister in question considers himself the next in line if and when Netanyahu will step down (or be escorted out). As such, he tends to make quite a bit of diplomatic level  statements overreaching his position (pretty much the norm for Israeli politicians). With rumors of Netanyahu's government possibly not lasting its full term, expect more of these.

There's nothing said about where the funds will come from, because covfefe - think Trump's Wall. Same. Digging an extra 3km under Jerusalem? A slow prospect on a good day, all the more so when talking about  the vicinity of the Old City. Building a cellar, or mending foundations is a PITA what with all them historical and possibly "holy" remains lying about. As for naming the station - same thing, gets the headline, doesn't actually have the authority to name stations...

Well it is rather funny when the name of such a station would normally be something like "Western Wall". "Temple Mount", "Dome of the Rock", "Herods Palace" etc etc and they give us "Donald John Trump". How funny is that? What next "Dome of the Trump", "Trump Palace" , "The Trump Western Wall", maybe a 4th crucification cross can be erected for " Trump who died to save our his taxes". Change the Christian story to "three wise men and a con man" went to visit baby Jesus, the wise man gave him gifts of Gold, Frankincense and myrrh, and the con man took them off baby jesus to pay for a few nights stay in his Trump branded cattle barn.

You make a valid point Morch about building underneath the 'Holy City", It looks good on paper but would be a non starter and take 100 years as engineers would have to stop every time they found a piece of pottery or human remains.

Well, the naming ceremony, if and when, is a while away. Enough time, perhaps, for Trump to be out of office and/or said minister either moving up, down or sideways in his political career - thus sparing the city this ignominy.

As for the second point, seems there are several versions - some talk about a bee line to the Western Wall, others claiming that the station will be located under the Cardo (in the Old City, about half way to the Western Wall), and the least daft one (relatively, that is) less daft. The proposed extension may be dug parallel, but outside the Old City walls, with the new station either near Zion Gate, or Dung Gate (closest to the Western Wall).

Perfect! The Trump Dung Gate Station. Couldn't be better. Name it tomorrow.

By naming a station after him, the Israeli leadership would be playing to Trump's egomania.  It's a gesture of thanks for services rendered and the expectation of more to come.

'Grand Bethlehem Casino and Resort', anyone?

It will go bankrupt and you will have to play in the manger! Odds on for a virgin birth? - 20 gazillion to 1 -about the same as the odds of Trump making it another 4 years in 2020.
