If you can have one wish for Thailand in 2018 what would it be.

If you could make one wish. Any wish for the country and people living here for the new year what would it be? Lets keep it civil but I think everyone has a different idea for the " Perfect Thailand " lets see what this brings up.

1 - My one wish would be tougher rules on getting a drivers licence and pushing traffic laws to include making people found offending major traffic laws having to be re tested. I love Thailand but after looking at the road reports from this holiday season it was horrible. SO fixing traffic I am placing above the easier immigration rules.

I wish expats would stop trying to hypothetically fix Thailand on message boards.

That's two, you said one!:shock1:

I wish for all the money spent on corruption to be invested in infrastructure.

The basic issue isn't in testing, or the need for re-testing.   It is in enforcement.  People follow traffic laws because of the consequences of not following them and the reasonably high probability of getting caught.

In Thailand there is a very good chance you won't get caught because there are no formal road patrols, just road blocks.   If you do get caught there is a nominal payment for almost everything.

In most western countries, people follow the traffic laws because there are major consequences.   Just drive drunk in most countries and see what happens.   Go ahead and speed.   Not only is it a hefty fine, but the insurance rates go up, etc., etc.

Yes, the way roads are constructed, the system of U-turns and many other factors, including endless sois entering main roads, is a problem.

I agree. That's why the line of people in violation having to be re tested. There will be some who drive very well so a blanket law re testing everyone would not work. But it's my one wish just trying to imagine it coming true brings a smile to my face

To treat foreigners equally by doing away with all those draconian and phobic measures as if we came here to do harm to Thailand...

I wish that they will take real steps to learn English, starting with the children. Well over half of the information available on the net is in English, and the Thais could have access to so much more information if they were proficient in the language.

Much like the rest of these wishes, it probably won't happen as not much action is being taken. But I truly believe that the way to solve most of the problems here (corruption, traffic, drugs, etc.) is through education.

Best Regards,

Wishful Thinker.

I would like to be able to receive packages here.  They can be tracked to entering Thailand at Laksi then enter the postal system never to be seen again.  There is no tracking within Thailand.

Start the process to fully legalize medical and recreational marijuana and making the laws regarding hemp and hemp seeds to be fully legal. Billions and billions of baht could be made to support rural Thais and many many others.

That Thai women come to the realization that the Thai male isn't a god.

I wish it was as easy for me to stay in LOS as it was in the 90s. If I was allowed a second wish, I'd wish for all the bar girls to be as pretty as they were in the 90s too.

The price of 95/91 gas stays under 30 baht/liter

I guess to sum up what I was trying to say about vehicle laws is that Thailand ranks 73rd for cars per 1000 people at 206. And ranks second in the world in accidents per capita.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_vehicles_per_capita Source on the vehicles per 1000

Source on the vehicular deaths per capita.

Wishing the best to everyone in the new year and remember the road is a dangerous place

Foreigners can own land. Even as small as a couple of Rai. Would happily pay yearly tax just to get it in your own name and not have to set up fictional company or risk it in a Thai name.

There's a lot going on in Thailand and as I see there is progress in many areas but there is one thing that make me sad every day and I'm sure this affect both tourists and Thai citizens. The Garbage!! You see it everywhere and on places that could be really beautiful if it wasn't for the Garbage. I dont think this can be quick handled because you need a change of attitude and an infrastructure that can handled the Garbage. I love Thailand and the people here, have lived here for 6 years but travelled here earlier for 30 years. Thai people, tourist or any other citizen doesn't deserve to live in Garbage in such a beautiful land. Thats my wish.

A lot of my wishes have been covered already. How about doing something about the Soi Dogs? A "Catch, neuter, release" program and an adoption campaign.

A crack down on noise pollution.

Life would be so much better without the incessant noise.

Get rid of the boats and buses on beach road and the speaker trucks.

I wish all bars, dancers and employees reverted to 1998 rules, guidelines and quality. But that's like wishing San Francisco reverted to 1967.

Good one. That alone would attract 40,000 additional retirees. That's not a lot scattered all over Thailand as they are not going to buy downtown Bangkok. If each generated an additional $25,000 income then that would be an annual boost to the Thai economy of $1 billion, or 33 billion baht.
