Former anti-graft commissioner voices protest against increasing the value of gifts

A former anti-corruption commissioner warned that increasing the value of gifts to be given to or received by government officials from 3,000-baht limit may pave the way for corruption.

The former member of the National Anti-Corruption Commission Mr Vicha Mahakhun issued the above warning in response to a recently floated idea that an NACC announcement should be amended to adjust the 3,000-baht cap for the value of a gift because the amount is not relevant with reality.

He said that any attempt to amend the rule should take into consideration the reality of the Thai society where nepotism and patronage system are rampant in the government bureaucracy.

he was heard to mutter, 'not on my watch.'

There is a difference if an official receives a large box of tasty Swiss chocolates or a small box with a tasty carrat Swiss Rolex watch !!

The solution however would be simple.  Any gift exceeding the allotted amount could plainly be surrendered to the official watchdogs :wai:who could sell the item at auctions and the money be handed over for charity or to the officials having a very low salary (ahem! ahem!):giggle:

Its not relevant as envelopes with 3000 baht within the limit a 1000 envelopes with 3000 baht in still in the limit= a nice watch no rules broken.

The amount is equivalent to 1/3 months salary of those on minimum wage, so it is relevant with reality.

Why do they need/want gifts at all?

Pave the way...? It would seem the 'way' is extremely well paved already.

Usually the receiver doesn't even want or need gifts. The benefit is the desired reciprocal effect to be bestowed on the giver.

No such thing as a free lunch.

Really?

as a former knacker commissioner,  he should know that ship has already sailed. (Way up de-Nile)

And this is why he is a former commissioner.
