People see 2018 unrolling much like last year: Suan Dusit poll

While some bright spots can be anticipated for this year’s economy, most people do not hold high hopes for political and social development in 2018 Thailand, according to a Suan Dusit Poll result released on Sunday.

Of 1,230 people polled nationwide, 48 per cent thought that politics in the year ahead would remain much the same given the continuing unstable political factors and lingering conflicts among political actors.

 

Almost 30 per cent expected improvement as they trusted in the government’s road map to an election and that it now has a more experienced administration, while 22 per cent expected the worst given the unclear election plan and the ongoing corruption.

 

Asked about Thai society, 44 per cent did not expect much progress given the accumulated problems of crime, drugs and inequality, while 28 per cent expected change for the better citing their belief in Thai people’s willingness to see a united, peaceful society. 

 

More than 27 per cent, however, thought that it could get worse because of the urge to survive in a declining economy.

 

Asked about the Thai economy, almost 39 per cent thought that it could be enhanced given increasing trade and investment figures and more stimulation from government and the private sector.

 

More than 32 per cent saw no improvement ahead given the increasing living costs and political affects against economy, while almost 30 per cent thought that it could get worse because of continuing effects from global economic trends.

 

The poll, titled “people’s perception of politics, economy and society in 2018”, was conducted from January 2 to 6.

No change. No elections.

Yep, same same but different. Deja vu all over again.

While there is always reason to doubt polls in Thailand... this is a terrible result.

 

Countries are simply groups of people writ large. And when people/countries feel that there isn't going to be any improvement in their lives, don't feel excited to get out of bed to face the day, don't sense that things are improving, then it reflects stagnation and stultification in the society.

 

Countries don't progress or improve when there is stagnation and stultification.

 

It is a sad time for the Thai people...

Every year same same.  I've been here 12 years (spent two of them waiting for traffic lights to change from red to green); few improvements (trying to think of any); daily road carnage the same; police inactivity the same; politicians getting rich the same; lack of education; floods then droughts; the only thing on the up are prices and TAT tourist numbers.

Seventy per cent expect either no change or worse for unstable political factors and lingering conflicts. 

That reflects a serious lack of confidence in a military regime that has governed by absolute power for more than 3 years to achieve its stated mission of eliminating corruption and political discourse.

 

Prayut might better serve himself as a power broker to promote a pro-military/pro-autocratic advocate for the next PM and take his ex-officio seat in his appointed Senate. Albeit it not that such political positioning would best serve a democratic Thailand.

These Dusit polls really are sad when you look at the amount of people surveyed. The credibility of these you could put on toilet paper. I can't assume anyone with even a small IQ believes anything what the Dusit polls say. It is hardly scientific when such a small sample of people. Someone must be making some money of them somewhere!

I agree with you 100%.

 

With a poll sample of 1230 people and 76 provinces in the country that works out at just over 16 persons per province including BKK.
