CP is ready to phase out dangerous chemicals in its products if…

Senior chairman of the CP Group Mr Dhanin Chearavanont has recently indicated that agro-industrial giant is ready to phase out three dangerous chemicals, namely paraquat, chlorpyrifos and glyphosate if it is proven affirmatively that their remaining residues underground pose a health hazard to consumers.

His remark was welcomed by Mr Uthai Noppakhunawong, deputy director-general of Agricultural Technique Department, as a sign of social responsibility from CP Group, although there has been no clear sign from the other executives of the group that they will stop selling their products which contain glyphosate – the only dangerous chemical permitted for CP.

Mr Uthai said that other companies selling similar products which contain the dangerous chemicals should also demonstrate their social responsibility and realize the threat posed by the chemicals to consumers.

Should there even be an "if"  . . . . . . ?

Why would anyone even want to buy one of these fat laden processed pig products?

A lot will need to change for Thai farmers to stop using glyphosate. It is very difficult to do without it here. And their farming practices are all they know.

So not going to happen.

Bring back DDT - the mosquito population has soared since it was banned.

Prove it, I think all you need to use is common sense, they admit themselves they are dangerous

chemicals, phase them out and the environment will be a much better place.it's a no brainer.

BUT if it effects the bottom line it will never happen.

A single large dose, administered orally or by injection to animals, can cause excitability and lung congestion, which in some cases leads to convulsions, incoordination, and death by respiratory failure.Paraquat is exceedingly toxic to humans. ... The lethal ingestion dose of paraquat in humans is 35 mg/kg.

What the hell human life is worth nothing as long as the baht keeps rolling in.

Mr Uthai Noppakhunawong, if needed, I can help you out with dozens of names and contact numbers of obscure institutes, labs, and 'scientists' providing expert assessments that these chemicals are harmless to humans. And if you are willing to pay a little more, they will even state that they in fact cure more diseases than 'ice cream' of a fortune teller.

So essentially they are ok with poisoning their citizens or it would plainly be discontinue. They know what they are doing. I don't think 2nd class expats count unless it hurts tourism.

But so has the healthy human population.

How about Mr Dhanin Chearavanont agree to eat meals for a week delivered free in which foods are laden with paraquat, chlorpyrifos and/or glyphosate? I don't think he would be so cavalier with his eating.

These 3 chemicals are a strange pick to target.

Glyphosphate with is recent re approval in the holy EU - a herbicide. Paraquat a non residual broad spectrum  herbicide used before planting of seed to clean up small weeds.

Thirdly chlorpyriphos a common soil insecticide with known  week residual and only just re approved in California .

Very few alternates for thai farmers in corn production cycles if removed from the market.

Yes that is the problem with farmers they never want change even if they are poisoning their clients.

But your right farming is harder if you can't spray chemicals, so maybe the prices should go up too for farm products. But only for those that don't use chemicals.. good luck with that... (don't see how that can be done here with the corruption ect). But that is how it should work.

Problem being without herbicides the weeds strangle out the crop. Alternative is mechanical cultivation which may work a little early in a growth cycle. But also this disturbs soil and opens it to erosion which is the worser of two evils.

Anyway this is a non discussion as there won’t be residuals in groundwater found.

Rather thai agri cos focus on stewardship of soil and farmer labour safely as soils in tropics are valuable and vulnerable and there are very few virgin lands to develop in the future .

So to meet population growth farm intensity / yield has to index upwards

Most of  CP's stuff is horrible tasting processed garbage. Better stay away in any case.

Foolish man. The chemical did not work in the long term and mosquitos adapted and became resistant. Biology 001.

DDT only worked under a limited timeframe. Unfortunately, during that time, other important insects, birds and reptiles  were lost allowing pests and  nuisance animals to over populate. It also caused genetic harm in the human population.

It is rather sad that there are so many ignorant, really ignorant, uneducated people who do not make an effort to understand the impact of organic chemicals.

It is difficult as the company has a near monopoly on chicken and pork products in Thailand. The food served on the airlines, major hotels, restaurants etc. are all CP linked There is no way of escaping the products.

Exactly and since they have monopoly on small retail with 7/11 in which easy 50% of the population in cities buy their food...

They poison knowingly about 30-50% of Thai workers, not taking into account the poisoned water sources of the hill tribes in the north, which grow crop as only production for CP and don't even grow food for themselves...

We have pack of curled lettuce in the fridge which is 2 weeks old now but still looks very fresh...bought in Mr. CP's Makro.

How is that possible? In Europe it spoils within days.

I'll wait untill it starts rotting, just want to know how long that takes.
