Taiwan will add a third gender option to passports and ID cards, pending ministry approval

Another win for LGBTQ rights in Asia

The Gender Equality Committee of the Taiwan’s main legislative body announced last week that they have undertaken the legal research and approval process necessary to add a third gender option on Taiwanese ID cards. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already declared there should be no problem adding the new gender option to passports as well.

The addition of a third gender option on identification documents helps protect the rights of transgender, intersex, and other gender-diverse individuals. Following Taiwan’s legalization of gay marriage last spring, this step further cements their status as a beacon of LGBTQ rights in Asia.

Only a handful of other countries have approved an alternative gender option for passports. Last year, Canada joined Australia, Denmark, Germany, Malta, New Zealand, Pakistan, India, Ireland and Nepal in adding a third option on passports.

Male, female and confused

thats two.... ??????

sorry... three.

If a big hitting power player like Taiwan says it's OK, then being a weirdo is definitely acceptable. Will they be adding this option to the 200,000 passports that they had to burn last week because they didn't even know what their national airport looked like.

Does not being a "weirdo" make you feel like you're actually more of decent human being than you actually are? I find that's often the origin of all kinds of ignorant  intolerance. Always some "other" to feel superior to.

Sad.

Congratulations to Taiwan for showing a way forward for Thailand and other Asian nations (on same sex marriage and gender identity issues as well).

Of course, some of those nations are hopeless on these issues like Malaysia.

A country making such changes on ID's I get. But how those this work with passports? Usually one presents them at foreign immigration counters, where they may or may not be able to process such distinctions.

You are what you've got, your junk knows it makes sense, just the head is a bit confused.

So what comes under 3rd gender.  ,,,, All of the Different Wannabes,,,, or can one put down for 3rd Gender Lesbian/ Homosexual/Transgender,,with op/without op/Hermaphrodite?,,,,,   Or just put down ,,,,,Just Different?

Taiwan was one of the more traditional places to more decadent areas, looks like they are playing catch up.

Civil rights for minorities is not decadent.

Yes I realize that but by the same token not everybody can be as open minded and accepting as you, I suppose on a deeper psychological level it could be felt as a threat to the species, whatever, on a purely social level transgenders make me fell awkward because I don't know how to react to them, while I can enjoy sexual banter or a light hearted conversation with a girl, transgenders feel threatening and alien. It is like watching a dog walk on its hind legs, it isn't done well but one is surprised to see it being done at all.
