Dear everyone,

my application for a non o visa for volunteering (as english teacher) in a school (small village north of Thailand, they don't have money to pay me a salary) was rejected: they said you need to apply for a non b, only foundations can ask for a non o.

I had all the required documents provided by the school:

 letter from the director of the school and signed copy of his ID card; it is also clearly stated that am going to apply for work permit as soon as am back;

 papers showing this is a legitimate government school, all signed by the director;

 description story of the school;

 contract between me and the school;

 photos, copy passport etc

Apparently there was nothing wrong with my papers, they just said you cannot be a volunteer at a school, you will need a non b visa.

Is this true? Should I try in Savannaket instead? The school can send me a new letter of invitation addressed to Savannaket consulate...

Please help!

Thank you.

You are not the first person turned down when doing volunteer work at a school.

The other person was told he needed a work permit application approval letter to get one.

It says this on the requirements for the non-o visa. See: http://vientiane.thaiembassy.org/upload/pdf/Visa/Non- ED & O.pdf

Singed letter on the organization’s letterhead stating duration of stay, duties, etc. along with a copy of the organization’s registration. Single-entry Non-Immigrant “O” visa will be issued for the purpose of volunteering only (No multiple-entry visas)

Not sure Savannakhet would be any better. It says foundation instead of organization on their requirements in Thai.

Thank you UJOE. So it seems you cannot apply for non o volunteer visa through a government school, but only via foundation/organization. I didn't know that.
